the kid just turned 22 last month, he is someone the flames over the next 10 yrs can build around, if he develops under Hartley sky is limit and will be a top defender. 6'5 and 212lbs and can skate and get shot on net. take this ALL day long, we can only hope he excels like Seguin did after leaving the bruins

Yep Seguin sure was a bad apple, like a few more of those to fall from the tree

The Flames are my #2 team, I'm very happy and impressed with the trade. Just pointing out that he's certainly not one of the top 5 dmen in the league.

I think you touched on a very key element there Pixel: Hartley. He very much deserved the Jack Adams this year, for the way he worked with and got the most out of the young kids on that team, while also getting the most from his seasoned veteran leadership. I expect him to be able to get the most out of Hamilton, the kid is going to keep getting better under the right guidance and in the right environment. He can't go wrong playing with a Gio, Brodie, Russel, Wideman......Should give us even more depth on the Blue.

Karlsson, Subban, Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Keith, Seabrook, Giordano, Letang, Burns... which one is he better than? Omitted are guys like Byfuglien, Josi, Brodie, Ekblad, and OEL.

Karlsson, Subban, Weber, Doughty, Keith, Giordano... better yet, which one of those is he going to be better than in a year?

Whoa there!! I would take Ekblad over Hamilton 10 times out of 10!

actually it doesn't lol, you wouldn't get Ekblad for a 15th pick and 2 mid second round pics. A little reality here. Im not saying he is the second coming but he has the solid potential to be a top pairing guy in a few years. Boston screwed the pooch plain and simple. NIce to be on the right side of a trade for a change

Nah, it does.

I wasn't arguing that Hamilton isn't going to be a top pairing guy (if he isn't one already), I was saying that he probably isn't a top 10 and sure isn't a top 5.

If he truly were a top 5, his value would be similar to Ekblad's.

Again, no argument that he isn't a solid player with a ton of potential. Good trade, hopefully they can sign him for a realistic number.

Letang for sure, puts up the points but isn't a great defender and is injury prone, and possibly Seabrook, whos skill is extremly difficult to judge as he plays with Keith.

yups .. great deal ... Calgary is in the top 4 teams with their defense positions...no question a " game changer for the flames" Craig Button ...let the party and good ole Alberta rivalry begin .. Teams will once again fear traveling thru Edm , Clgy come visit Alberta and learn how to play hockey ...love it

Dont kid yourself. Trevling had little to do with this deal other than shuffle some papers and fill Burkes coffee cup. This was classic Brian Burke all the way.

Most of the guys above didn't become what we know them as until after their24-25 birthday... Karlsson is the exception, and Ekblad will be interesting to watch in his sophomore year.

Hamilton, had huge hype in his draft year too, and has been on a lot of watch lists, especially by his size and skating....his shot seems to be perhaps his only flaw...... Heck, Chara didn't become a name until he left Ottawa

I find it an interesting comparison: Edmonton is very heavy with first round offensive talent, Calgary has put even more size and potential on their already effective blue line. Different philosophy for sure. Having said that, Flames do have Monohan, Johnny, and Sam Bennett up front to put up points. I look forward to the coming season, to see how both teams do respectively, and I honestly hope to see Edmonton really turn it around and become competitive again. The Battle of Alberta was always a lot of fun back in the days when it actually was.

I see you're not terribly familiar with Burkes moves over the last several years he was a GM.

So I guess this thread is now just a general "NHL news" thread? Not sure...

Regardless...funny to see Prust go to Vancouver. His girlfriend must be going berserk right about now. They're in Italy right now.

Seems like it doesn't it...? So, how about Bieksa going to the Ducks? Because they need another big ugly nasty player on their roster. Oh wait, no they don't!!

Frolik just fine, my cocern is Hudler will be traded. That would be a mistake, IMO, the Detroit attitude carried CALGARYa long ways this year. Hudler a large part of that.

Yup, they need to keep Hudler, they could dump Raymond, and Jones, maybe even Stajan.

I could happily see Stajan and Raymond go, but I still like Jones and think he has more to develop and show. Glad that Frolik is coming this way, seemed like a good deal on him too.
