Default Scope Base/Rings

Can someone tell me what all I'm looking for to mount a scope on 2 rifles? I have a Burris 3x9x40 that I'm moving from my Tikka T3 to a Nat'l Ordinance 1903A3. It has Weaver bases and rings, currently. The rings are really high up, since it was for a 50 mm scope.

What I want to know is, what brand/model of rings and bases are good for the following setup:
  • Nat'l Ordinance 1903A3 - 30.06 w/ Burris 3x9x40mm scope (1" tube).
  • Tikka T3 - 7mm Rem. Mag. w/ Leupold 4.5x14x50mm scope (1" tube).

I've never mounted a scope, before, and would like to do this for myself. So any hints or tips would be helpful. Both rifles have or have had a scope on them already.

Thanks, all.

The one piece Tally rings work very nice on the Tikka.

Dednutz on the Tikka, perfect alignment, no lapping and very strong.

A one piece base does not guarantee perfect alignment nor negate the need for lapping.

Perfect from what I can see when using the alignment bars under a magnifying glass. I never observed such alignment before with any other mount. If its not 100% its definitely very close. I usually lap every ring but I'm not a big fan of lapping aluminum. I tried two sets of Talleys and each set was out of alignment in different directions. Warnes worked great but I wanted to utilize the tapped screw mounts on the receiver.

Perfect on that particular rifle maybe, but not as a blanket fix. If the receiver is out of alignment those deadnutz mounts will kick you in the nutz. The action will not flex to fit the mounting system and in fact have seen some pretty scookum steel tactical picatinny rails bend all out of shape to mate with a misaligned receiver.

I doubt very much that the receiver is out of alignment. Talleys were the only rings that would require quite a bit of adjustment with shims. The Warnes and the rings that were supplied with the rifle lined up nicely too. I have a few hundred rounds through this rifle and its shooting great, less than 0.5" 3-shot groups using cheapo Rem corelokts.

Heck, when it comes to proper scope installation, I would guess that only less than 5% of people actually go through the trouble of checking alignment, shimming, lapping etc. Rarely hear of any problems with the other 95%.

Exactly...my rifle with the one piece Talleys were in getting lapped last week, ready for pickup. I have learned that they need to be done or count on a dented scope tube.

Don't be so sure.

Like I said before, I never lap aluminum rings only steel and both types of ring mounts never left any marks on any of the scopes I took off. If you experienced dented scopes in the past there could be other issues going on, such as applying way too much torque on the ring screws.

30-06 Tikka T3/Zeiss Conquest 3x9-40 first range visit, adjusted zero along the way using cheapo Core-Lokts:
