How old is too old
Looking at buying a used bow. I was wondering how old is too old for compound bows. The one I was looking at was a 2011 Carbon element if that's any help.

Msg admin and have this moved to the archery section.
Depends on usage and treatment more than age. If it has been stored properly, not left in a hot vehicle, not dry fired, it should be fine. I have an 08 dxt that still works perfect, but I'm very careful with my gear. Only buy from someone you trust. Inspect for cracked limbs, twisted cams, etc.
I personally wouldn't buy a bow that has been used in competition. Competitive archers usually take good care of their equipment but they shoot a lot, and that many shots may lower the lifespan of all the moving parts. IMHO.
Always, and I mean always, put a new string and cables on a used bow. A broken string can kill you and/or cause serious damage.

As long as the bow you are looking at is fast flight or similar strings (no steel cable circa 1980's) you should be fine. The only issue with used bows is you have no idea if or how many times they have been dry fired and will get no warranty.

Too old
Personally, I would not go back to any of the bows that were cammed for 50%. The ones I started with. Today's bows pushing 80% are great, and even at 65% let-off, I think they make the game way easier. My shoulders and elbows are blown-out from thirty years of butchering, and everytime I practice, I know I'm gonna pay for it for the next few days!

My old Jennings bow will be 21 years young this fall and it will be in my hand as always.
Hopefully another rut crazed moose will fill the freezer
