Default 7.62x39 ammo types

Any experts in this field, amor piercing, steel core, fmj. Are these all fairly similar or completely different?

Well if you plant to hunt with a 7.62x39 don't get full metal jacket or armor piercing because that is illegal for hunting use in Alberta. The reason there illegal is because they don't expand. I think fmj does though.

Full metal jacket doesn't expand, but fmj does? I think you got something confused there

I got some prvi soft points, haven't shot anything so don't know how well they work

I use the silver boxed Norinco FMJ's w/ a lead core. They are safe to use at most ranges (that allow centre fire rifles) and are clean (most importantly cheap!). Not legal for hunting big game. Steel core aren't allowed on most ranges as they'll punch holes in metal targets. Armor piercing are not easy to come by in 7.62x39, let alone any calibre. If your questions are related to "what to buy" rather than informational, FMJ's are 95% of what's our there 9mainly lead core, but some steel). Be more aware of whether they are corrosive or not. There's some heritage east block surplus ammo out there that is super corrosive (but really cheap). Need to clean the heck out of your rifle after each use when shooting that (ie water and simple green, not just a regular cleaning). IMO, don't bother with corrosive when there is a good cheap alternative.

I ended up with some steel core, that's my reason for asking, luckily I have a friends place to shoot at.
