Youth rifle

Hey guys I am trying to figure out what rifle I should get my girlfriend.She is only 5'2" and 98 pounds so not very big.I let her shoot my remington model 700 30'06 the other night and it is way to big for her (rifle size).So I got looking at yoputh rifles and took her down to russell sports and let her shoulder one it fits way better.So now I have to decide between three rifles.

1-Remington model 7 in 260 rem

2-Remington model 7 in 7mm-08

3-Remington sps youth in 308

what do you guys think mostly deer and maby elk

700SPS youth in 7mm-08. (I'd say 243Win, but not with a 20"bbl)

700 SPS youth in 270Win(22"bbl), then use either the Remington Managed recoil ammo, or the Federal Fusion Extra lites, or reload 110gr. TSX's

Savage 11FYCAK, in 243Win, or 7mm-08

Savage 111FYCAK, in 270Win, same loads as above.

NEF Handi Youth in 243Win, or 7mm-08

Seeing that elk is on the list I'd be inclinded to go 7mm-08.

This seems like a good opportunity to get set up for reloading so you can taylor the rounds to suit her level of tolerance.

I would try, "To be perfectly honest, Honey, I don't want the hassle of reloading, but Dick said it would be the best way to get you set up for hunting so I am willing to give it a try for you."

Myself, I would lean toward the larger guns(270) and lighter rounds. As she shoots, she may become more tolerant of the recoil and she may be able to go to a hotter load.

I fully agree with Dick. My 12 year-old son started shooting a weatherby vanguard compact in 7mm-08 and he loves it .He's not very big (90 lbs.) and the recoil is very manageable( way less than a .308 in my opinion).

I was going to buy a youth model for my son as well back a few years ago. But decided on a full size Model 700 SPS stainless in 708. He was 12 at the time. Glad I went that route as he grew like a weed. I love that rifle too. Put a Burris Fullfield 2 on it 3-9-40, ballistic du.

Man, I'm not familiar with the caliber, but a .708 must kick something fearsome. Tough kid!

id say 2506 in whatever version of rifle that fits her hands.
the problem i see is the pistol grip needs to closer to the trigger, not just cutting the stock off.
small fingers cant reach the trigger to get the first joint to squeeze smoothly.

Take her to the range first, and let her try a few different rifles. See what she likes.

have you looked at the model 70 youth guns at all? i had one in 243 when i was younger and shot a bear and deer with it, both one shot inside 100 yds

A couple months back I ended up purchasing my wife (who is smaller framed) a Remington 700 SPS Youth in 7mm-08. The gun fits her like a glove.
Time will tell but it should be a good gun for her. Can shoot those lighter loads on varmits or go to the heavier bullets on big deer and moose.

another good choice is the Browning Micro Medalion 257 roberts 260 or 7mm-08 would be good choices

My wife and son(both quite small) use a Ruger UL 77 in .257 Bob. Nice looking rifle too!

Kids these days are so better off. In my day used my grandpas Model 1917 Remington 3006. Open sights. Still got her. Steel butt plate and all.

i got a nef youth in .243, stout little gun, lots of weight in a very short little package, so it soaks up the recoil, probably similar to shooting a regular .22-250 imo....anyhow it shoots well, trigger breaks at 4.0lbs even on the gauge and is crisp, safe little rig and its had two shots at critters, a running coyote at 70 yrds and a broadside whitetail at 188 yrds and both dropped on the spot with 95 gr win ballistic silvertips....i've since rezerod with 95 gr fusions which it shoots just as tight also but haven't shot anything with it yet but i love that little rig for what it costs....an elite 3200 3-9 on it and its great....to do over i'd go burris ff2 3-9 with ballistic plex reticle for the same 250 bucks (canadian tire south) so it could be doped to further for coyotes etc. but its a nice little rig for a loaner or not to be used very often......great for the wife excuse and i'll start my boy with it but i know he'll soon be into a bolt gun not long after that...just because i think it will be fun to buy a bunch of new guns again and live vicariously through him for as long as possible

I picked up a Remington Model 7 CDL for my daughters in .243 and it fits them perfect. I used it the last 2 seasons. New toy. I would go with the 7mm-08.
Weatherby has a youth Vanguard that also comes with a full size stock.

The model 7 or the Browning Micro in 7-08 would be nice. I guess she shoots the '06 good but the gun is too big? It would be nice to find a used '06 you could shorten the stock on, then you have the ammo available for the both of you. Ultimatly it should be up to her as she has to shoot the gun, and if it doesn't fit she may get a flinch no matter what size.

Which ever rifle you get for her to try out, try and get her to try double hearing protection with plugs and muffs. The reduced noise level at the range will help eliminate a flinch which can easily develope with new shooters at the range especially if there are other shooting larger calibers near by.
The Stevens blind mag rifles are available in 243,25-06, 7mm-08.
If you hand load you can build ammo to suit a new shooter with 75 grain loads for a 25-06, or get a friend to load them for you, as lighter bullets generally have less felt recoil. try and get a Limbsaver pad on which ever rifle you get for her
The nice thing about a 25-06 in my opinion with lighter bullets is that its fun to shoot off 20 or more rounds at a range session. The light loads help build up a shooters confidence. Once that happens you can get her to shoot some 100 grain loads which will kill any deer in Alberta.
Other loads you may consider might be 6.5x55 or 7x57 mauser, these are generally regarded as low recoiling rounds. FS
