REM MDL 700 what would you build on this platform?
I have an old 25-06 in a Remington model 700 and want to build a new riffle, keep it under 30 caliber size and easy to find ammunition. What would you build??

.270 Win or .30’06, the easy to find ammunition statement pretty much wrote the script.
Although right now nothing is easy to find.

Yup same as above but the .25-06 is definitely worth considering doing again!

If I wasn’t putting it back into 25-06 I’d go with a 280 rem. Ammo isn’t absolutely everywhere but it is still pretty easily found. 25-06 and 280 rem are my go to cartridges.

The only cartridge under 30cal that is very easy to find is the 270Win.
You need to take up handloading. It opens a lot of doors for you for other ones. 7x57 or 280 Remington would be a couple good choices.

If you are a reloader, go 280 Rem, 280AI, or 35 Whelen. But a custom barrelled 270 with a tight twist for 150s and a 22" length with a light contour and an aftermarket stock would be a nice, carry anywhere rifle.

I second this. 280 is my new favourite cartridge. Push Barnes 145LRX with RL26 (both are unicorns at this time) for great accuracy and good velocity.

Had a 280 built off a 30-06 M700 this year. I love it.
Couple guys talked me out of the AI. At least you can ream it out later if you want...

If you ok with semi regularly available ammo I’d look at the 6.5 rpm
It’s a stretched out 6.5x284

Fire-forming is a PIA. Factory brass for AI is expensive. And no animal could ever tell the difference at any reasonable distance.
280 is in my opinion the best use of the 30-06 based case, though truth be told they will all get the job done from 25-06 right up to the Whelen.

There is someone on here that has a Ron Smith gain twist in 25-06 and if I remember right he was pretty happy with everything about that rifle.
If this is you I would like to hear more about it also.
Edit: I could be wrong about the chambering, it could have been a 25-06ai.....

I'm pretty sure that was Dick284. Could be mistaken though...
