methanol on decoys for frost??

Have you tried to use it on frosty mornings, and if so did it fade your decoy?

We were discussing this earlier in the season when the decoys were frosting up. I would be concerned about the alcohol damaging the paint over time.

I've seen some guys on tv take a propane tank and torch, line you'd see a roofer have, and wave it over the backs of the decoys once they're frosted. Really fast and safer than methanol

I stole the wife's hair dryer, plug her into a battery pack, works great.

If using methanol on decoys use brake line antifreeze instead. It is the same stuff just designed to not corrode rubber which in turn would be less wear and tear on decoys.

You need to do more than just melt the frost, a wet decoy is no better than a frosty one.

A source of heat melts and dries the decoy. I have heard of guys taping hand warmers to the decoys to prevent the frost from even forming,,, sounds pretty time consuming to me.

Torches do remove frost and dry decoys quickly

Or you can stop hunting frosty mornings and switch to afternoon hunts when conditions are likely more favorable ,,,no frost or dew and likely some wind compared to those calm windless bright frosty dewey mornings so common at this time of year.

Surely you just? How big of a battery pack for your average 1000 watt hair dryer? A car battery would only give you a minute with one.

That's the beauty of methanol. It evaporates almost right away and your left with a dry frost free decoy.

the best is get a flocking kit and flock your decoys
I had 2 dozen decoys that were a tad worse for wear
so I ordered up a bunch of flocking last winter, and full body flocked them,
they came out not exactly perfect but boy oh boy do they work no shine no glare, if they get a tad frosty just a quick wipe with a cotton towel ready to go again
I had 3 dozen brand new big foots this fall and the new big foots would frost up and be shiny , so I started just using the flocked decoys on frosty mornings and it was just like I had the geese on a long fishing line , zero flares they just came right in and most of the time some would land, as soon as I started using the ones that were not flocked I started having geese flare off , its well worth the investment of time and funds to fully flock your old decoys
a half pound of brown flocking will do almost 4 dozen decoys , then add some black flocking for the head and necks and tails white if you want but just a flat paint will work for that , total funds I invested was $120
and it kept me busy in the -30 degree weather last winter

Even the flocked heads on our decoys were frosting badly, and the frost was not easy to remove.

I gotta think most guys use all flocked heads, except for maybe silohouettes. Touching them up is never a bad idea though.

Fully flocked but pricey.

Only have 3 dozen fb's but all are fully flocked. Never a problem. But each decoy has a black sock on the head that comes off just before shooting time if there is no wind and chances of frost. I use open top bags for these and use some giant tiger black socks on the heads for protection. Keeps them looking new. Would be a bigger job with double the amount of decoys though. Never had a problem with frosting on the decoy bodies.

Also have a couple dozen fully flocked shells. You have to take care of them but never any frost.

I try my hardest to hunt windy days vs light/no wind days. Might not work out all the time.
