Default Cleaning surface rust from rifles?

Just wondering if anyone has any tricks that have worked for them to remove surface rust from guns. I know the best way is good maintenence and not letting it get on there but if there is some, how would you go about removing it without ruining the blue?

Thanks

I use a brass bristle brush and G96 spray. It cuts surface rust and won't bugger the bluing, just don't get too aggressive.

I second the steel wool and oil. Doesn't damage bluing at all

Bronze wool and 30 weight motor oil. I'm told that 0000 bronze wool won't harm the remaining bluing.

Four aught wool is the right stuff but if you use Hoppes 9 and oil mixed 50/50 you will find it lifts the rust far faster and actually brings the bluing back quite a bit.

+1 on the 0000 steel wool and oil. icehunter is correct about the rust itself damaging the blue, but if your rust is limited to light speckling and the bluing apart from the rust is good, you can achieve excellent results.

If the rust is heavier you could wind up with bare spots and pitting. They are already there but you can't see them under the rust. So it's still better to do it than to leave the rust on, because it's eating your gun.

This one comes from the Brownell's series of books on gun tips, mount your rifle in a vise, take a piece of round stock and roll it back and forth across the rust spot with pressure. The worst of the rust will be crushed leaving a bit to clean up. There was a thread on here a while ago about removing rust but I have looked for it and can't find it. One post was about a rust remover that wouldn't damage the blueing, I'd like to give that a try.
