Default 7mm-08 Brass availability??

Well the best childs rifle thread got me thinking, and was wondering how readily available brass for this cartridge is? Another year a half to go till the oldest is able to hunt, so I guess I better start getting the ducks all lined up.

I know P&D always seems to have bags of 50 in stock.....its right there on the shelf for you....

Most other places definitely carry it, but unless you actually ask....who knows if it is in stock?

They usually have a pile of bulk brass in stock and I haven't had a problem picking up the brass I need in the past but I guess you never know. I think it is a common enough cartridge that you wouldn't have much of a problem and of course once you have a fair bit of brass, you are in good shape because 7mm bullets are usually well stocked. The biggest issue I have had lately with reloading supplies is with primers. I have learned my lesson and I will be buying in bulk from now on when it comes to components that I know I will go through large quantities of.

I agree.....especially on the primers statement......if you find the ones you want...buy them up!

If push came to shove 7-08's are easy to make from 308or 7.62 NATO brass.
I use the left over 7.62 NATO brass the RCMP leave at our range, size them, trim the crimped primer(Mil Spec) out and your good to go.
Just respect that Mil Spec brass has less capacity, than the commercial stuff.

Ever try chambering a 308 in a 7-08?
It will not go.(unless they are super stubby)
Using 308 headstamp brass for a variety of calibers is not so dangerous.(been there done that)
Like any activity, it is best performed when your alert, and a bit of planning takeen place before hand. Such as well marked MTM boxes, and close examination of each round before it is placed in the magazine breech or chamber.(gee where'd I see that before)

Kinda like shooting a marble in a sewer pipe, accuracy will suffer, but the case should fireform quite nicely.

Longdraw, do you need special dies to reduce the neck diameter? and do you have to neck turn after?

Just FL size em, and trim the neck to square. No other BS is necessary, .308" to .284" is'nt all that much of a reduction. Going .308" to .243" is a big step and may in some case require a bit more work after the fact.
Your first loads will have a hint of a secondary shoulder, dont worry, it will be gone on the first firing.
