where to shoot around Edmonton?
Hi all, i was wondering where everyone in the Edmonton area goes to shoot. I do not belong to any ranges or gun clubs or do you just go for a drive and find a spot. My fav gravel pit out by Clyde is overrun with people on quads, they watch out for you as there is many people down there at times but i just dont feel comfortable there anymore. love to hear your suggestions

Sherwood Park Fish and Game runs a range east of town near cooking lake.
100, 200, 300 yds.
I've heard there is one similarly close west of the city but I'm not sure where or how you get a membership etc. Apparently it has much longer range targets (700yds at least, maybe 1000?)

Where to shoot around Edmonton? Gee, just about anywhere apparently, from the news I've seen. Pretty dangerous up there... and getting that way here too!

Genasee is between Carvel and Warburg, has ranges all the way to 700meters.
Contact Blaire at Lock and Load.
Wildwood has a club
Drayton Valley has a club (pm me on that one)
Also think about Spruce Grove (see above link)
and Sherwood Park F&G out by Thorsby.

Where is the range by Mundare? I've been going to the Spruce Grove club - great set up.

Ponoka is North of Ponka,
Take Manaik(sp)(Hwy 2) over pass, go West, then South on the Frist Gravel road, go about 2 miles south.
Not the most shooter friendly for rifle guys IMO.

What kind of shooting?
There's also a sporting clays club out at Beaverhill (20 mins east on highway 16). And, the Edmonton Gun Club is still open (for now) on Highway 2 south near the airport. EGC is normally only open on Wednesday evenings and weekends (weekends only if there's a shoot going on). Pretty much only do ATA trap there.
Indoors, you can shoot pistols or rifles at Phoenix Range, just off the Sherwood Park freeway, or pistols only at Wild West in WEM.

thanks for all of the info guys. How far from edmonton do you think i would have to drive to find a nice large chunk of crown land to do some plinking and real world practise with the larger guns. I do know of a few by rocky mtn house but thats a long way to go every time ... thanks

probably something around Athabasca or Whitecourt maybe. You have to go a ways to get away from the farms. Make sure you get a county map or something so you don't wind up on 'crown land' that someone owns.

There is crown land by Bruderheim just about an hour north east of the city just past Fort Sask. Also out by Clyde there is a gravel pit on crown land as well and it is an hour straight north.

Where near Bruderheim? What are the legalities for shooting on crown land? I'd love someplace close to shoot rimfire...
Thanks for any help.

I have but one question.
Why would you not want to join an organized shooting club?
Sure a guy can go to crown land, shoot all he wants, until, someone claims you shot at or near them, or someone reports you for hunting out of season, and the Fish Cops show up.
Sure with a bit of explaining, and a bit more time, maybe even a Lawyer bill or two will solve your problems. Would it be necessary if you joined a club, and supported that club, and actually became a statistic in a column that favours the persuit of our hobbies, persuits and passions.

Well that was why I asked about the legalities of shooting rimfire on crown land. I take it from your unhelpful response that it is probably illegal. I've been lurking on this site for quite some time and never seen mention of this issue.
And the reason I'm interested is the closest range is an hour away and Bruderheim is close and I actually might find the time to pursue my interest in plinking with a 22 on a regular basis.

It's quite legal, but with some potential bumps in the road.
Sorry for the sarcasim, I thought you'd catch the "Sure a guy can go to crown land, shoot all he wants"

I guess I did miss your point.
I have nothing against shooting clubs and when I have the coin plan on getting a pistol and joining such a club.
I'm just interested in shooting the 22 someplace convenient and close...as long as it's legal and safe.

Have you checked out the Sherwood Park F&G they have a range over by Tofield.
there are also F&G clubs in Ft. Sak, Vilna, Lamont, and Busby. www.afga.org for info.
If the membership dues are too much might I suggest finding a friendly farmer who will allow you to plink away on his place.
