140 grain for Elk/Moose
Guys,
I just purchased my first rifle ( Tikka T3 Lite 7mm-08) and was wondering if a 140 grain factory load is enough for moose/elk. I don't ever see myself handloading and this rifle will be used 95% of the time at the range or for deer. So if ranges are kept under 200 yards and shot placement is good will they do the trick?

Yep....easily will do the trick....
My 7-08 likes the 140 Partitions and the 140 TSX....either will do the trick nicely on elk, moose, bears, etc...

Ditto no sweat on a 140.
I killed piles of game with my 284Win and nothing but 139gr. Hornady BTSP's(cup/core) all was as good as you could expect.
As for elk well I killed a 5x5 bull with my 25'06 (100gr) double lunger and 70 yards later a dead bull elk.
It's where you place the bullet, not how much bullet you mis place that kills game.

You'll have ZERO remorse with the 7-08 I promise you that. Its my primary gun and I wouldnt have it any other way. I've owned several different calibres and absolutely love the 7-08 and wouldnt hesitate to use it on a grizz if I didnt have other choices in the safe...

I would have no issues using that if I were in your shoes like Dick and Rack stated. To many guys get all hung up on "needing" some big caliber to kill an animal...they forget the basics of shooting and shot placement which is deadly.
I shoot a 30-06 for everything and there isn't an animal in North America that I would hesitate shooting with it.

First of all congratulations on your first rifle. Always nice when a new rifleman is born, esp. one who intends to spend time at the range.
From what I've read here your new rig is GTG for anything AB has to offer, 'cept for the biggest bears or largest moose.
May I suggest you look around for a silhouette rifle club in your area, they're very welcoming, and through them, you'll have an opportunity to shoot those 140 grainers out to 500 meters! Spend enough time at the silhouette range and your off-hand hunting & shooting skills will be solid (if they're not already). :-)

When therealj is done learning his new rifle and load, they prolly will.
If'n he joins the Alberta silhouette shooters at their game, they definitely will.

Whoa good confidence Booster!
You bet you will have no problems with 140 or the 7-08 as a cartridge my son will be toating a 260 this fall for his first Elk and if not shooting close to 140 than it will be a 130 tsx.
No room for ney sayers on this thread

How exactly was the 7-08 designed? Is it the same as the .284 Winchester, a necked down .308?

One Rifle
Watch out for the guy who has only one rifle? I met a couple in my lifetime and they are masters of that particular gun, shoots everything with it, from meerkats to big Eland bulls.
