Bringing in an S tier goaltender to make a deeper run into the playoffs and then failing to even make the playoffs is the biggest choke of all seasons.
Was kinda cute at the start of the season listening to flames fans talking about the cup run of 2021.
Poor marky.

Not really. Kinda have to be good in the first place to have choked, no?

An allegory on how I generally feel discussing hockey with an Oilers fan.

Me: Um, might want to call the fire department, looks like you have a bit of trouble and your house is on fire!
Oiler Fan: Haahaa, my house is worth more than yours and I've got two Ferrari's in the garage! What do you have, a BMW at best?
Me: Well, sure, but that's really not the point, your house is literally on fire.
Oiler Fan: In fact, I won Best Christmas Lights 5 times in the '80's, how many do you have? One? Come talk to me when you've got 5.
Me: Your house, it's literally burning to the grou......you're right, you got me.

Oh but before skates hit the ice, the flames were a very good club. Much better than Edmonton no?
Atleast that was the consensus among the flames thread pre actual play.....
So yes they choked. But it wasn’t until the season started.

Before the season starts, every club is better than Edmonton, every club is going to make the playoffs, every season is going to be better than last year, just ask their fans.

What about your Penguins? 1st losing to 4th is worst than 2nd losing to 3rd.... if my math is correct

Yep. I distinctly recall a post stating " having analyzed the Flames roster I think they are a far more talented team than the Oilers, Jets, Habs, and Canucks."

And Cindy Crosby. It was Blackhawks or Penguins for #1 overall.

There was only 6 points difference between the Pens and Isles and the Pens managed to win a couple of games in the series.

There was 9 pts difference between the Oilers and Jets, and the Jets swept the Oilers right out of the playoffs.

Think Pens did better than the Oilers IMHO.

And the Oilers are supposedly the greatest thing since sliced bread the way some talk on here.

The Oilers had a 1 goal game and 3 overtimes. I not saying they did great, but it was a close series.

And the Pens should have done better than the Oilers, they were playing a lower seed.

Most Oilers fans are saying the Oilers exceeded the season expectations finishing in second place... if you can find any comment at the start of the year saying the Oilers would win the President's trophy or Cup, please post it up.

Other than Bessie that is... we love him.. a die hard fan..... but the glasses are a little rose colored.

Why are people discussing who is better among those who sucked? They all sucked.

Either Jets or Habs now. Take your picks.

Kinda humorous coming from fans of a team that finished so far back in the rear view mirror they were barely visible. The last few games vs a ravaged Canucks team after the playoffs had already begun flattered them in the standings.

There's bad playoff performances and then theres just flat out decrepit all year. How embarrassing.

You sure are extra salty lately and go WAY out of your way to take a shot even when nobody mentioned the Oilers.

You would think after the Flames awesome season you would be a little more worried about your own teams many, MANY problems, no?

There is 31 teams in the league, 15 of which never made it past the regular season and 8 more never made it past round 1, if you look at the 16 teams that made it to the playoffs who would have predicted that the Oilers, Leaf's, Capitals, Penguins, Blues, Panthers, Wild, and Predator's would all be out after 1 round.

In case all you hockey minds haven't realized yet the playoffs is an entirely different game than the regular season, ask the Oilers and Leaf's about this, teams built for the regular season never go far in the playoffs plus you need a great goaltender not just a good one, hence the reason the Habs and Jets are starting round 2 tonight.

There are 8 good teams battling yet, watch the hockey and you will see why they are still in it, the BOA is long gone, let it rest.

It was a joke.

Cutting a fine line though, saying the post I quoted didn't mention the "Oilers" when Elk was specifically talking about, and mentioned, "Edmonton". You know, the Edmonton Oilers....

Me worrying about the Flames is going to do diddly to their season next year. If you want to discuss who's going to get traded, if Gio is going to be unprotected, who the backup is going to be, lets have at her, probably in the Flames thread though....

Habs in 6. Another factor not mentioned much in the last 3 pages is what is the health of the teams going in? Habs get their bodies back and each game in got better. I am a die hard fan and realize how good the other teams are BUT those records were built on regular season match ups. And this was far from a regular season. Habs couldn't beat Flames and Ottawa much all year!!!! The first round is always tough to get through.

On some teams for some players, it probably means something, other teams for other players, it's probably a coincidence, but I found this interesting:

McDavid, Cap Hit: $12.5M - Out;
Panarin, $11.6m - Out;
Mathews, $11.6M - Out;
Karlsson, $11.5M - Out;
Tavares, $11M - Out;
Doughty, $11M - Out;
Marner, $10.9M - Out;
Toews, $10.5m - Out;
Price, $10.5m - In;
Kane, $10.5m - Out;
Kopitar, $10M - Out;
Bobrovsky,$10M - Out;
Eichel,$10M - Out;
Seguin, $9.9M - Out;
Ovechkin, $9.5M - Out;
Malkin, $9.5M - Out;
Benn, $9.5M - Out;
Kucherov, $9.5M - In;
Stone, $9.5M - In; and,
Vasilevskiy, $9.5M - In.

Of the top 20 paid players in the league, only four are still playing. Wondering what ratio that is, so if there are 31 teams, lets say 23 players per team, 713 players total, 184 still playing, Top 20 represents (16/20 eliminated) 80% eliminated and league has 74% eliminated. Closer than I thought it would be, although if I calculated top 17, it would change things dramatically.

What that tells me is that as good as some of these players are, it's still a team sport and a team with a couple of good players will not beat a team with depth throughout their lineup.

I'm curious what the league will do. I watched it about a dozen times, maybe charging but don't think it was boarding, didn't leave his feet, and it wasn't late (same "late" criteria for a pass apply for a goal or whistle?). The angle I saw made it very difficult to tell if Evans head was the main point of contact or if his body was and Schiefle's shoulder road up for secondary contact. He definitely cranked his head pretty good on the ice though. Maybe intent to injure, which is difficult to prove, as he made no attempt to reach for the puck?
