Gun transfer question?

I recently registered my firearms with the government and was wondering what I should if I ever wanted to get rid of them.

For example, when I pass away what is the procedure for transferring them to someone else? Or suppose I don't hand them down to anyone and I just want to get rid of them...am I expected to hand them over to the federal government?
