Portugal made Winchester model 70
I was hoping some members might be able to share their opinions on the newer Portugal made model 70.
My understanding is FN bought Winchester and now produce them out of Portugal. I have been offered a featherweight on trade and wanted some hands on experience from those that might own or have own one.
Much appreciated 360hunt

You have absolutely nothing to worry about. The build quality is still very good, and no discernible drop off from the recent US made Model 70s. If the trade is in your favor... give er!

In my opinion the Portugese model 70's I've owned had better polished metal and bluing, the wood inletted to tighter tolerances than the South Carolina manufactured ones.

I agree with bushrat, Ive got a Portuguese, 7x57, .264 win and a stainless 308, as fine rifle as Winchester has ever produced, certainly better than any of the ones (M70) I owned threw the 80-90's.

I thought they were only assembled in Portugal.

I’ll take my Portugal made M70 over the previous US made ones I’ve had. Fit and finish is better IMO. Great rifle and probably my last rifle. The only thing I’ve done is change out the bottom metal for a Williams unit and the plastic grip cap for a metal one which is off getting blued right now for it.

I have a 270 super grade model 70. I believe it was made the first year they moved over to Portugal as I was trying to get one before they left N America manufacturing. Whatever I point the thing at dies. It’s a good looking shooting iron. Fit and finish is good. No complaints here. Little heavy but I knew that when I ordered it.

How do they compare to pre 64? I don't mean newer pre 64 style but real pre 64s.
Trigger pull too? Onces or pounds?

Trade received and overall thoughts
Just following up on my own post.
I went ahead with the trade for a Portugal FN made model 70.
My expectations were model of the road quality. But I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and finished of this rifle. Obviously FN has their **** together in Portugal. If I didn't know better the rifle could be a custom.
Thanks to all that left feed back on these newer model 70's

Portugal Built M70 Fun
I loved my Winnie Portugal Made Model 70 Compact Featherweight .308. Shot really well. Fit and finish was amazing. I’m used to Push Feed Winnies and I was really impressed.
Now to find a Featherweight in a .22-250.....
Cheers, Barney

Cant go wrong with any Mod 70 even the 80s and 90s ones.
The Portuguese made rifles are better than most other rifles in price range, with the added bonus of controlled round feed. Having said this I am somewhat of a Winchester fan.

Those newer Portugal made Model 70’s are fantastic in my opinion. I own two extreme weathers and wouldn’t hesitate to add a third.... it’ll be a few years down the road but if a good deal comes by I would scoop it right up.

My BACO portugal sporter is probably the nicest fit and finish m70 I've ever owned.
The blueing is deep and shiny, the wood stock is absolutely beautiful, and the jewelled bolt is the most slick and smooth of all of my m70s
It's damn accurate too.
I wouldn't turn my nose on one.
