Default Flies Vs Bugs

Hi guys,

I've been on the hunt for a resource for quite some time... With being so new to fly fishing, I have been looking for a book, app or web page that has photos of flies and lures, and then whatever bug or critter that fly is supposed to imitate... Bonus points if it also lists how it should be fished...

Does such a thing exist? Or should I just look up each fly one by one and start my own resource?

Thanks!

Jeff

I have a book at home by Skip Morris and Brian Chan called "Fly fishing Trout Lakes". It has a fairly detailed chart in it that shows what different patterns are supposed to represent and how to fish them. I'm sure there are others out there dedicated to other fishing methods.

Dave Hughes - western hatches is a good one. Shows a ton of info on the timing and entomology of the main hatches and effective flies for each. Western mayfly hatches by dave Hughes will tAke you further in depth on mayflies only.
He also has a great tying book I can't think of the name off the top of my head and I'm at work, but it has very detailed fly tying steps with probably 50+ patterns grouped by individual insects. I'll check its name when I get home.

Looking up hatch charts online they'll usually give info on good patterns for each insect too. Just a quick Google or YouTube from there.

Fishin' Hole would probably be the closest that I know of.

I live near Onoway, but come into Edmonton for work.

X2 excellent book. Fly Patterns for Stillwaters by Philp Rowley is another great book along the same lines, although it is aimed at fly tiers.
