It is my understanding that this is prime time for rattling, and that calling works better later on. But I'm no expert on the subject.

I seldom use either.

Near peek rut is best for both. Rattling will work now but more just curious bucks will come.........unless you make it sound like a real war! like there is a doe that came into heat early and two giants are fighting to the death over her...

It is getting to prime time for rattling. My best results have always come in the pre rut stage. Biggest buck I have rattled in was on halloween morning. He came in puffed out and ready for a fight. Right now is when buck dominance is established.

Was in my stand a few days ago, at work now, first time I actually heard bucks grunting, heard a couple going at it for a good 20 mins fighting/antlers crashing, of course it was pitch dark out, nothing after the sun came up.

No way!!
During peak rut the bucks are chasing lots of does in cycle. At this time there aren't does in estrus, if there are it's very few, and the bucks are starting to actively search out the does. You won't get better response to rattling, in general, than the last week of October and first of November! Scrapes are most active now too, usually visited every couple days, while during peak rut the bucks often abandon them while tending does.
