Brand new to this site... and hunting
I will start by introducing myself. I am from Grande Cache, AB. Born and raised. I have been married for little over a year, and have two boys, 4, and 9 mo. I work as a gas plant operator about an hour north of Grande Cache, and am a voulenteer firefighter on my days off.
I have always had an interest in hunting. We used to shoot golphers neer my grandads acerage, bring the tails to the farmers, and get a dollar per tail...that and I shot a blue grouse last week... Thats as far as my hunting experience goes.
I did the AHEIA in the spring, and challenged the PAL restricted/non-resstricted this summer. My dad stopped hunting before I was born, and my Grandad got too old for it when I got old enough to go.
The good news is that it is going to be cheap for me to start. Through my dad, I inherited a 30-06, a .303, two 12Ga.'s, and a .22. A buddy gave me his .22 with almost an inch of dust on it, My Grandpa on my moms side gave me a 12Ga. and a Budapest M95M Which shoots a 8X56R (if anyone can help me find ammo, or even just brass, it would be greatly appreciated) My Grandad on my dads side lives in Stony Plain, and next Wednesday, I'll be on my way to pick up two 30-06's, a .303, two .22's a 12Ga. good binoculars, a good-for-it's-time range finder, and a 12 gun safe.
That should be a good start to things. I have put a lot of lead down the local range, and am starting to be decent at shooting clays. I wouldn't say I'm a great shot, but I can hit a pop can at 150 yards...which is good enough.
My wife has legitimately tried all sorts of game, and only likes Elk. I really like deer. So the first thing I want to take is a small deer. Something that will last me a year by myself.
Anyhow, I figured I'de introduce myself. Now I need to find someone in the Grande Cache area who wants to show a rookie the ropes.
