This weather should finish off the apple trees that managed to survive last year.

My yard took a serious beating last year. Lost more trees than the previous 20. I do not need a repeat.

Yup, mild winters are hard on trees. We're really short on moisture so far, as well, think we've got 40 % of normal.

Interesting. Wonder if the groundhog will see his shadow in a week and a half? Maybe spring is only a few weeks away. Could be hard on the bees this spring if they freeze out. ***** willows are one of the first plants with pollen in the spring.

Folklore says to take a few small twigs with ***** willow catkins and put them under your pillow to improve your sleep and dreams. Then again folklore also calls the ***** willow the "witches tree".

Snow insulates roots from deeper freeze,, less moisture.

The best for trees is to water them in the fall, water weekly until freeze up when ever that is, even if that means late November
The idea is to try and freeze water onto the roots so when the chinook winds blow they still have moisture to live on, lots of warm winds dry everything out.
we really haven't had a cold freeze up type of winter especially in the calgary area,
So if Mother Nature doesn't take cake of things its hard on the trees and shrubs
nothing wrong with watering trees in warmer weather, it could e a long time until April showers
hopefully this helps
