Elk in WMU 544?
I am planning to drive all the way from Calgary for elk hunting in WMU 544. Just wanted to know beforehand if there are elk in that unit. Also is it crown land up there or all private. Any other tips for elk in 544 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lots of closer places for elk, if you are going be careful and aware a large portion of the zone is a native reserve.

I have a draw tag for antlerless elk in that Wmu, but thanks for a heads up on the native reserve. So there is no crown land? Also, does anybody know if there are any elk in the unit?

I’ve hunted in the area before, a handful of times, and I’ve personally not seen any sign of elk. Based on the harvest reports (0%) I’d say it’s not looking overly promising.

Ok thanks, has anyone else seen elk in the area? Might have to forget about the hunt because if there are no elk than it is not worth the long drive.

why would you pull a tag so far away from where you live when there are so many great options for elk closer to you?

And from a WMU he obviously hasn’t researched.

I would suggest researching the area and even doing early season scouting and talking to land owners in the area before pulling a tag in a random wmu.
I would be very shocked if you could roll up in any wmu anywhere and shoot a elk without researching the area first.

The reason I picked this wmu for elk was that it is an undersubscribed tag which allows me to hunt from Dec 21 to Jan 20(Having a longer hunting season is always fun). Plus I have a friend who's house I can stay at in Slave Lake. As stated by one of the member's I should have done prior research on the wmu. I just assumed since it was a north wmu there would be less pressure and more animals. However seems like that is not the case. Anyways thanks to those that gave their insight.

Elk in WMU 544?
Very very few elk in that wmu and the rare ones are on the extreme west end.
And as said previous the lakes and settlement land take up half the zone.
I’ve hunted and traveled in that zone for 30 years and have seen zero elk.

Should listen to locals especially trappers for advice. However lots of elk in WMU 523 so west end of zone should have potential for some elk.

Trick here being , you've got to know the area, just driving for hours
to get there ain't gonna cut it.
