There’s an argument being made that Alphabet’s approach to privacy concerns would result in significant improvement from the current situation. They are looking to establish an independent privacy commission that will review applications for data collection within the area and consider the usage of said data on a case by case basis. That strikes me as a pretty big lift, there’s a whole lot of monitoring and enforcement that needs to be in place for that to work but it’s a start.

However if you look at the current situation honestly we’re in the Wild West, it’s not like this isn’t already happening. 1984 was 10 years ago, not very many of us understand what’s being collected today and how it is used. Even when someone like Snowden tries to show the public what’s happening it’s met with a shrug and a yawn by most. The worst part in my opinion is that all of this is happening in private companies and disclosure it not real high on their todo list. If you want to really get an idea what’s out there have a look at Palantir Gotham.

As for the rest of Wylie’s concerns; we already live in a plutocracy, at least this is an overt one.

We could of been fighting this off for the last 30-50 years while you all keep sending your children to their indoctrination centers, allowing every special interest group with a victim hood mindset to influence them.

Allowing radical marxists to educate and groom Canadian children into SJW climate warrior's and useful idiot's, just like Hitlers youth, for the last few generations is how we got here.

Now these confused children are all grown up and they have the right to vote...

Now how do we fix it?

Half of the population is contaminated.

The original poster was drawing a comparison between Sidewalk lab’s proposed Toronto community development to the book 1984 which was written by George Orwell in 1949.

IMO We’re well past that point though, IDC started to make “insane” forecasts about the amount of machine generated data being stored in 2007. They figured that the period between 2006 and 2010 we would end up with 6x the amount of data being generated than had ever been in human history up to that point. Their estimate was low. So 2007 or 2009 was the year the situation flipped depending on how you look at it.

So, what about the carbon footprint of building and electrifying this ‘community’. Is our PM going to shed some tears or are they powering it with ethical coal from China instead of Albert...
