there are lots of nice rivers and streams within about an hour to hour and 1/2 around Whitecourt, just grab a Backroads map book and have a look.
the only thing i would mention is that a lot of the streams and creeks up that way are extremely low for this time of year. lots of the creeks crossing the hwy were close to having dry sections when i went up two weekends ago. the Freeman by looking at the stream flow data page is even lower right now then its historical lowest point in fall. puts a lot of stress on the fish due to low water and higher temps so if you do fish them, release the fish as soon as you can and don't fight them for extended periods.
that being said a couple of my favourite streams up that way are the Little Smoky by Fox Creek and the Freeman by Swan Hills. also lots of other creeks and streams that if you can find access to them (tons of lease roads in that area but you need a good map to find the access spots). a lot of the streams in that area are better the higher up you get. less pressure.
good luck
Mike
