Default My daughter's first hunt

hunting nov 2011 006.jpg

While on our first hunt together, with my almost 4yr old, we came across 2 bucks and 2 does feeding on a hill. I pulled our quad into a compressor station parking lot and attempted to undue the damage my 'one step above Peta' mrs. had done playing Bambi for my daughter ohh so many times. I tried to explain to her what 'dead' was and what shooting the deer meant, she looked up at me with her baby blues and smiled as she said "can we eat him"
We then stalked back to where we saw the deer, my daughter still in her motorcross helmet, and saw them starting to move. I raised my .454 casull lever at 150yds but couldn't make out which were the bucks, but bucks and does were both open so I chose the lead deer. As I was waiting for a shot my daughter yelled out "are you going to shoot him daddy?" and the lead deer stopped and looked over then fell in its tracks from a lung shot. My daughter then began jumping up and down cheering and asked if we could eat him now!!
Upon approaching the deer I was surprised to see I shot the smaller buck. My daughter was thrilled, even when I explained the field dressing proceedure. She stood and watched while eating trail mix and never flinched once!! We are planning our trip next week, I think I'll keep her

Good for both of you...I am happy to hear your story. I went hunting for the first time in many years and shot my first deer. I spent a year and a half getting all my stuff together (firearms licence, rifle, gear, etc). When I got home I was putting my gear away and my wife told my five year old that Daddy shot a deer and it was dead and it will never see it's mommy and daddy again. He was bawling. I explained to her that I loved the whole hunting experience and that experience was not about killing. I guess she doesn't see it the way I do.
