338-06 or 35 whelen
I have a Parker hale 30-06 and am playing with the idea of a new barrel. Is going to a 338 or 35 an option and if it is what one do you suggest? Why? I do my own reloading and don't plan to shoot over 300yrds.

338-06, you will find better projectiles in .338.

Having a .338-06, a .35 Whelen AI and a 9.3x62, I would suggest the Whelen. The .358 fits in nicely between the .338 and .375. For it's size it is comfortable to shoot, easy to load for, a real good variety of bullets are readily available and factory ammo plus properly headstamped brass is easy to obtain..
The effectiveness of the .35W on large Game out to 350 yds is outstanding as well. There is nothing not to like about it from my experience.

I just went through this exact process...more then likely I spent way too much time over analyzing it. haha.
I went with a 338-06, mainly for bullet selection, more grain options (Nosler) and better ballistics. I will resize 30-06 Lapua brass.
I went with a 22" barrel in a 338-06...should be here in a few months.

Can’t speak first hand about the 338-06 but I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at the option. This last November I went the Whelen route myself. Probably for the nostalgia factor as much as anything but I wanted a little more thump so I ended up in a .35. Chewed through the factory stuff about a week ago and started load development yesterday. A pleasure to load for and shoot. Feeds smooth like butter. After yesterday I have all the faith in the world it is capable of being a very effective 300+ yard rifle. I imagine the 338 would be a similar experience. Don’t think you could go wrong either way.

The way I look at it between the two is if you really want a step above the standard 30-06 then go to the 35 Whelen or 9.3x62 as also mentioned. The 338-06 is a fine round but so is a heavy loaded 30-06. I have a Benchmark 1 in 12 twist 35 Whelen which I really like, can shoot anything from pistol bullets for the 357 magnum up to the 310 gr Woodleigh.

I went 338-06AI to be different. Reloads of 225gr ABs or TTSXs with H414 powder shoots great. I built mine for heavier bullets but a 185gr TTSX would be a sweet fast load!

Factory loads are available for the Whelen, they are not for the 338-06, this is a factor, if you plan to ever flip the rifle it is seen as a wildcat while the 35 is a standard cal, I see ammo daily. I have the Whelen and I thought about this decision for years, in the end if I wanted something fast and flat shooting, I have a 30-06 and a pair of 300 mags (RUM and Winchester) this is meant to be a hard hitting medium range calibre, the 35 does that exceptionally well JMO.

Order your barrel, Jury is a good choice. Henry Remple is a great option to get the barrel installed.

I get a lot of fun plinking with pistol bullets and trailboss ! Basically no recoil . Keep eyes open for good price on bulk pistol bullets. Its one of the main reasons I choose 35 Whelen over 338-06

Go for it....I thought about it for probably 10 years before I finally put one together. In about '02 or '03 a friend and I got 2 35 cal tubes from Bevan King. Made the mistake of ordering 700 magnum contours. IIRC they were 14" twist. They went on 700 actions , one LH, one RH. Mine at 24" would launch 225 Partitions at 2725 and shot very well. We expected more than the approx 8" of drop at 300 meters from a 200 yard zero. I had it in an HS sporter stock and it was probably 9 lbs scoped. Sold it a couple years later and started over with a Shilen in a smaller contour at 22". Also on a 700 but with a McMillan stock. Much lighter than the first one. Sold that one after a bit also. Went without a Whelen for a few years until 2012 when I had Bill Leeper put together another one on a 1949 Model 70 action with a 12" twist 23" Shilen in a McMillan Hunters Edge. I've managed to hang on to this one......
It's a classic old round. Try it, you might like it.

If you want a good read on the .35 Whelen, go to the link below.
Click on cartridge research and select the bullet diameter. Then select .35 Whelen. I used to think I would go with a 338-06 but this article has got me thinking .35 Whelen now. Read his write up on the 338-06 for comparison.

I don’t know why the pictures aren’t right side up...anyway, the rifle was a 700 CDL. I had Craige Douglas of AC Gunsmithing in Saskatoon re-barrel it with a #4 contour Benchmark barrel. He also trued the action, used a surface-ground recoil lug, adjusted the trigger to 2.75 lbs, and pillar-bedded it with Devcon steel putty. I can’t wait to shoot it.

My.338-06 loves those bullets. Ramshot Big Game might be your powder.
