Umm, sorry to hear you had issues.

The information that I posted was to correct a FORUM MEMBERS POSTING MISTAKE, not a mistake with the draw information. The information on-line and in the physical book are correct.

That said, I was trying to submit my draw application for the January Anterless hunts and some of the season codes were missing on the draw application form. I called the Relm helpline and they got it corrected on line very quickly! Like 30 minutes tops.

What hurts more is P5 was enough to get drawn for that!

I pulled it because of the change in dates as i don't care for the hunting pressure the area receive's in Nov and liked the idea of hunting mid Dec and booked time off work accordingly

For those contemplating the odds.
Seven seasons with 100 licences per season.

Priority numbers for this year.

P12- P15 + 383
P11 + 302 = 685
P10 + 399 = 1085
P9 + 520 = 1605

If 100% of high priority holders applied for this hunt it will take a P11 to draw.

But of course 100% will not apply, maybe 30-40-50%.

And with only 100 licences/season and three choices means that over the course of seven season and 21 "choices" there will be a factor of high priority application distribution which will crowd out lower priorities from some seasons and open the door to lower priorities for other seasons.

Most very high priority applicants will focus on the first season or three and will compete within their own pools resulting in some not drawing a licence.

My guess..... no more than 50% of P11+ applicants will apply here (likely even less), and most of these will only apply for the first three seasons. This will make it possible for those with a P9 or P10 to possibly draw in the third to fifth seasons and P8s might even have a chance at the last couple of hunts. I wouldn't be surprised if a few P7s are drawn at some point....

Those last few hunts are going to be tough.... Elk learn fast....

Yah I was surprised they cut the antlered season to one month from 3 as well, I think they are putting more emphasis on taking out the antlerless elk in the 200 zones. I couldn't believe P5 were getting drawn when I had my draw there I needed an 8 as well....quality and numbers of good Bulls is down significantly IMHO.

I was hoping that all higher priorities would be gone by now so that my 8 will get me drawn. I just want one really nice bull for the house, then I will go back to shooting porcupine Bulls for the duration of my time and ability! It will no doubt be buggered up in the next few years, so I have to cross my fingers!

Default Suffiel bull draw

How about we transfer excess animals to areas that have colapsed populations like Ya Ha Tinda.
Cadomin Sheep to other parts of the provice also.

I think the premise of that is good.

The reality is that it is very expensive to do. I believe they are also concerned about CWD. There has not been a positive test yet from the Suffield herd as far as I know, but they are still planning on testing again this year.

Expensive wolf food....

The CWD concern is a non-starter for any thoughts of translocating these elk. This will not change any time soon.

I have a priority 13.

Does anyone know how the hunt will be managed on the base?

I'm a little concerned it might turn into a Al Capone truck hunt.

Could a non-hunting companion come along?

Could anyone who hunted the antlerless season last winter provide any insight?

Thanks in advance.

There are plenty of Suffield hunt threads that have LOTS of hunter experiences and advice. I would start there.

I'm a little concerned it might turn into a Al Capone truck hunt.

You are not allowed to leave the trails with your truck unless you are given the okay by base staff to retrieve an animal. It is a very large base. You will have to drive and search and then leave your truck to stalk.

Could a non-hunting companion come along?

Yes. Basic rule is one firearm per licensed tag holder.

Could anyone who hunted the antlerless season last winter provide any insight?

Again, lots of previous thread to read through.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to wait till next year to draw. Should be quite a few people using up their high priorities this year.

There are several zones directly adjacent to the Suffield base (124, 144, 148, 150) and even more that are within close proximity. You can find the Draw Summary reports for all draw codes on the My Wild Alberta website (http://www.mywildalberta.com/hunting...t/Default.aspx) – reports will have a breakdown of what draw priorities were successful from last season so you can have an educated guess at what you’ll need to be successful for this season.

Default Guided hunt??

Have you considered hiring a guide? I’m guessing there must be outfitters in the area that (for a fee) would be willing to put you on a good bull if you supply the tag.

Has anyone else tried that approach?

Seems like huge risk to take a chance on a 10 -13 year draw priority and have to eat your tag because you can’t get access to private land or find any elk in the area.

will FN be invited to hunt during the bull seasons this year on the base? That will make for an interesting hunt.

They have been on the base all year long. My friend knows a native guy who was hunting there last week. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

I'm super jealous of you guys with high priorities who are going to be hunting in Suffield this year! I'm pretty sure that they are 4 day hunts tho not 3 days as stated multiple times already. I'm not going to bother even trying for Suffield with a P5, going to hope that others do and some other zones I've had my eye on get a little less attention, crossing my fingers. If not you will be able to find me with my bow in sept - oct a bit north of Suffield

Good luck to all, can't wait to see what gets pulled out of their.
