So who's an Argo lover???
After working way too hard slugging and winching my ranger through muskeg this fall to find a moose and try to get away from the crowds I'm seriously considering buying an 8x8 Argo with tracks to hopefully go where I want on any future early season moose hunts. I am aware that Argos are high maintenance but it wouldn't be something that I would use a whole lot, and I'm not hard on my gear. I have a reliable quad, a brand new ranger 6x6 and am not really interested in putting tracks on either because I'm fairly certain even with tracks they won't go where I want them to. I'll probably be buying preowned but as new as I can without breaking the bank. What should a guy look out for? What would you buy if you were going pre-owned? I like the avenger 8x8, and will hopefully be going 2008 or newer, and in the $10,000 range. Any thoughts?

Argo
The maintenance and reliability is drastically different then the old ones. I would suggest going to your nearest dealer and see if they have any used machines. If you want to buy it privately just make sure you have it looked at first .

Don't let common sense hold you back..... join the Argo club...
I have a 6x6 and 8x8, the 8 wheel is made for moose hunting, haul over a 1000 lbs cargo, floats, add tracks, cab for the rain and snow. It tows my tandem trailer alot better then my quad.
I built a gin pole on the front on the argo, works great for butchering moose, lifting the rib cage into a trailer.
In dry years i leave the tracks home, wet years run on tracks.
One machine has over 1000hrs, other has 700hrs.
Look for a Avenger with less then 300 hrs if you don't like wrenching.
2010 and newer have the Admiral trans, has easier steering with tracks.
Watch some of 'Rockdoctor' vids on Utube, he runs a couple Conquest on tires and tracks.
Plus you get to float across swamps and rivers leave all other traffic behind....
Here is my dream machine.$$$

We use argos pretty much always quads and choppers. I hate choppers.

I have run argos for 23 years now, and yes got it stuck a few times. (anything will at some point get stuck),
Never had to light it on fire and walk away,
Why would a person do something like that???

In my experience they get you where you shouldn't be and then leave you there there haha

There is a great looking low Km and hour 2012 750 HDI with tracks that was just listed on Kijiji out of Edmonton a few hours ago, I know it a bit over your price range at 16,950 but a nice unit it looks like.

We have run them for the last seven years with NO major problems. One with tracks, my hunting buddy on tires only. Good idea to travel together just in case. Gets you to areas that the quads and side by sides can't get to! Great to get back in the boonies away from the crowds!
Best of luck.

Argos
I have run them for 28 years and I have never had to walk out. Yes they get stuck yes things can happen but that's true with any machine.
Most peoples issues are due to user abuse and not knowing how to drive them.

I won't be basing my choices on the possibility of getting stranded. I've been stranded by quads and sleds and even a float plane once lol. I plan on maintaining it properly and driving it gingerly lol. Just the thought of getting back in the bush where I'll have it all to myself is enough for me!

To Me, this would be the Ultimate Hunting Unit, but I own a 2007 Polaris Ranger, and am too old to start over.

Few manufactured goods are as poorly designed as the OLD ARGOS. I swear that an idiot could design something stronger out of paper machete and paper clips.
HOWEVER I have to agree with Rather Be Hunting, who I have hunted with extensively, the new machine is pretty darn good!!!
They are slower, and it wish they had a high speed transmission, but the lack of suspension would be a problem.
I cannot help but wonder what would have happened if ARGO had done it right in the first place.

What sort of top speed do you get out of an argo?

Gps had dads 05 bigfoot 6x6 doing around 30 km but it was not quite wound up. Not very fast but in a argo its pretty good.
Argo's have been in the family for ever. Hauled a lot of moose and hunters. Dads newer one, the 05 bigfoot is real nice compared to the old 76. But it is a work horse and not a quad. I am in between quads so i used dads last season and this one. I hate the slow bumpy ride, I love that it goes almost anywhere, we dont have tracks but they would sure be nice. They still get stuck but you don't bury an argo like a quad would so with a little tug or winching and you should be out easy peasy.
Keep them chains and bearings lubed, stay on top of the maintenance and it should last and get you back out.
A friend rents newer 8x8's with tracks. He says they will go anywhere. After watching the Rock Doctors videos, I believe it.
