Default Sad sights today

Drove to Calgary early am and on the way south saw a fresh killed 3 point buck in medium. On the way back north saw 2 more bucks , a 3 pointer and a very big bodied 4x4.
also counted 9 coyotes rosdkilled on way home along with some other animals that were so pulverized couldn't tell what they were. Animals were really cruisen hwy 3 today.
Was so tempted to harvest tarsal glands from the bucks but that is illegeal without permission from esrd.

There used to be a resident cranker buck that lived around Thickwood heights up here- it was hit by a vehicle the other day!
Huge bases according to what my son saw.

Yup, dead serious!
The kid said that a fella had his hand around the antlers and it barely went all the way around!
he's seen that deer often up near timberline by his house.

I wonder how long it took to decent to swerve. Lol. Just kidding... thats too bad. Was a dead bull moose on the side of HWY 21. Theres always wildlife getting hit on that hwy. Lots of moose too. I hate seeing a beautiful animal wasted like that.

The statistics of wildlife hit on highways throughout the province is staggering. Reported collisions were.... in 1991 there were 5,997 animals hit on highways.

In 2008 there were 16,332 animal/vehicle collisions. 85% deer, 11% moose, 2% bear, 2% other animals.

Just in Strathcona county there are 500 or more deer hit a year. I know a F&W guy that has told me about some of the 200 class deer they have picked up after accidents.

More people coming to Alberta will mean these numbers will just go up. They should start issuing tags with vehicle registrations.

I'm looking for roadkill to use as bait for trapping coyotes. I haven't seen any deer or moose in this area yet, quite a few coyotes though. I don't want to introduce any deer or moose from outside of the area for fear of spreading a disease so I would have left those ones alone.

Must have been a bad day for critters crossing roads all over the province . Saw 3 deer and a coyote dead down here in a 10 mile stretch of highway .
