And just in case there is any misunderstanding,,, a Canada goose in the snow is not a snow goose!!!

Judging by the amount of snow I see in the fields here in central Alberta and the well below normal temp 2 week forecast ahead, it may be a while yet before we see large numbers of snow geese here.

What is the situation like in the southern part of the province? Have any snows started to show in numbers?

A group of my team shooters were out west of Huron South Dakota 11 days ago and did well. The people of the area however were saying the bigger numbers had already gone thru.

Yeah,,,,,Snow goose hunting in the spring is a real crap shoot,,, they follow the snow line north, so until we lose the snow here in the parklands, we are probably not going to see many. If we don't lose our snow until late April, the fields may be awfully wet with a lot of sheetwater (meaning the snows can walk off the roost to feed) and extremely difficult access. There is also a good possibility they may blow through rather quickly in their rush to get up the breeding grounds.

The non breeders are not in such a big hurry,,, we were killing decent numbers of juvies last fall so there may still be decent numbers of them,,, they may give us the opportunity to kill some white geese into May.

First scouting report from southern AB, 5 groups of guys watching one flock of 20-30,000 birds. There are going to be a LOT of people out there looking at them this year, too many people with waaaay too much time on their hands.

With the amount of crops still laying out in the fields it's going to look like a smorg to them, polish up the shoot'n irons and have at it boy's.

Snow goose breasts make great jerky, grind them fine

He he see how many groups will be watching after a week. Takes a “special” type of person to endure the type of failure snow goose hunters experience.

It’s not the failure we endure. It’s the amount of work to get your spread up and running, investment and time. That’s why we like sherpas 😂 Rule typically is 1/3rd of hunts suck, 1/3rd ok hunts and 1/3rd are great hunts. Not bad odds. Plus we get to shoot more then 8 birds 😊

The Op was out smacking them this morning. Let’s we them pics 😊

Heard some guys getting after them down south already. Still got 2’ of snow up here. Sun has some heat to it now though.

Got all the gear sitting in the garage ready to be deployed.

A crazy cold morning -22 in wind, and cannot get a decoy into the soil, had to place everyone into a corn stock, worked ok till a dog went blasting thru to get a bird.A total great hunt.

I'm thinking those Minnesota birds wont get over to Alberta
they probably will come through between Winnipeg and Yorkton SK

Default Snow goose hunters.

Very well done! Nice pics. How many decoys do you guys usually run? P.S. not sure if you remember her, but Molly is going great. She’s an awesome dog.

It’s nice you remember her, she’s a special girl! I used to run 400 decoys, 800 would be quite a spread. Got to be up early to get thiose all out. Good luck with the whites this spring. Take care.
