Straw ???

Anyone know why straw is so hard to find this harvest season? I usually buy a few small bales of barley or wheat straw for the garden/compost bin each year but this year nothing on kijiji. At least not in the Lethbridge area.

We are in harvest season, so we should have straw no?

Small bales are disappearing as the large round bales are much faster to produce and easier to handle.

Agreed about the disappearance of square bales. That said, I would contact where you bought yours last year. Typically once I find a supplier I am happy with for whatever, I don't switch unless something changes.

Since covid everything from net wrap, tractor parts has skyrocketed so much and every time I need a part it's just mind boggling what the cost ends up being. How do I figure out my cost of production. My machinery is paid for but every repair ends up being stupid expensive and has potential to run into tens of thousands of dollars.
Not far from lethbridge, Round bales of hay were selling off the field for $100 a bale. How can I make money paying farmers $40 or if like last year $80 a ton to drop straw and everyone using rotary combines which are miserable to bale behind. Plus fuel,parts,wrap and labor costs because I can't physically do all I have to do around here so try to hire anyone any good and see what that costs.
Anyway with all the straw around this year because of the wet year I didn't think it was worth baling so I didn't bale any of it.
The days of cheap straw or hiring someone to custom bale on the old prices are long gone.
People say your only out some fuel wrap and twine have no clue .

Yep. All the wheat crops I saw were very stunted.

Check Kijiji, hay/straw. I think there were around 5 small straw bale sellers,Gibbons, Red Deer etc.

Another thing, it's very, very easy to just sell to the baling contractors. $15/bale, cheque arrives, done.

What area are you in?

A lot of the auctionmarts have hay and straw auctions? Rosehill in Olds or Innisfail Auctionmart for example.

I buy clean straw at the local tack shop. Like $8 a compress cube… same thing was $30 at Cdn Tire.

Check your local tack shop.

Down here around Lethbridge every time I’ve located some, it’s gone before I can get to it. I’ll maybe try a tack shop like suggested.👍🏼
