Default WMU 338 January Cow Tag

Was looking in the regs, and realized that the late season cow tag is only good for the north part of the zone, hopefully no big deal. Looking for any advice. I do realize that I should and I will be talking with a few farmers, however I figure now is not exactly the best time as were at the tail end of harvest, and I am sure they are getting fed up with all the general tags that come to there door seeking permission.

Thanks for any help.

I grew up in that zone and I know where they hang out in January, my Dad got one 3 years ago. You have to remember it's a small area and your draw is only good till the powerlines.

Thanks for the help so far guys, im thinking walking he power line looking for the stampede tracks in the snow will be a decent start. Also checking the fields to help the farmers out with helping to prevent loss of there stocked hay piles

I have hunted that area on and off for the past ten years or so. I have killed a half dozen elk just Southeast of Niton Junction, but all on private land. The landowner's son has killed a few on the powerline. It's usually not a problem to get permission in January.

on the wolf lake road there is an older fella by the name of Larry Sape. he has some land on the west side of the road before the end of the pavement. always elk there, i'm sure he would give you permission.

I believe that got sold last year, as I was hunting the crown behind it and had a somewhat tense discussion with the new owner, who wasn't old and had "buddies from the city coming to hunt". North of there is posted no hunting. Didn't see any elk, had lots of quad and wolf activity. The elk in 338 are much more spread out due to hunting pressure, splits up the herds. My advice is talk with landowners and cover ground. Should be easy to find tracks in the snow.
