Thumbs up Drones- anyone still into them?

What'd I miss?

After many many (40+) years of flying R/C Heli's and planes, cars, boats, etc I have recently gotten into drones. I went through the last threads about them and see that Levigne25 is now gone, which is too bad. I would have liked to chat with him about the hobby. If anyone knows him, please PM me his info, or get ahold of him for me? Ruger I sent you a PM as well.

I am flying a DJI Phantom 3 Professional, and have a couple other mini's.

Cool hobby, the 4k camera on this thing is just fantastic, surreal. The video's and pictures they provide are amazing.

I look forward to chatting with others about this great sport.

Don't bother whining about legalities and how annoyed you are with them in this thread please. I started the thread to talk with fellow enthusiasts, not get in a whizzing match with anyone.

Gee Ken, as I don't own a drone, and you won't let me whine about how much they bother my inner child, you've really limited my participation in this thread. But nice to see you!

*Note: drones don't actually bug me.

I'm still flying a Phantom Vision 2, but would love to have one of the newer ones with the full gimbal like yours. Unfortunately, I can't fly mine in Jasper, and used to go to Mt. Robson park to fly. Now I'm hearing that they are outlawed there, too, but unable to find any official info. I originally bought mine for photography and video, but now I see how useful they could be for search and rescue. People sure do have a Hate-on for them , though!

I've wanted to try one out, but I'm not sure how much use I would get out of one.

Don't personally own one but am training for work purposes. Fantastic tools for aerial photos for work.

Bit of a learning curb for commercial purposes but good training. We are using a Phantom 4 and super easy to fly.

Watch those 4's, they have been dropping out of the sky. I searched all the forums I could find and many talk about unexpected unexplained lawn darting. It is what made me decide to go to a 3 pro. I am looking for a emergency recovery chute and tracker right now, getting some coin invested in this thing. Today I was practising running high speed patterns rudder and aileron control rather than just aileron so I can keep the camera facing forward. Next week my VR set gets here, and I want a little time on the controls before I 'strap in'.

It is funny, I have no interest at all in commercial applications, but have already been asked for aerial pictures and video.

They are extremely cool.

TC- thanks pal, nice to be back.

Wcthemi- they are very addicting too, in the space of a week I went from 0 to 6 of them, and am now waiting for a few more to show up, including a crashed 3 pro I am going to rebuild. Got the entire kit with hard case and 3 batteries, charger, remote, new body, maybe a parachute for less than the price of 3 batteries. As a bonus I get to strip one down to the bone to figure out how to fix them.
I just gotta watch that Big Bang Theory episode a hundred more times.

My phantom 3 fell out of the sky. Of course, DJI refused warranty.

I bought a new one and to be completely honest, I haven't had it back up for a flight since.

Kind of lost interest/confidence in them I suppose.

Anywho, good luck and have fun.

Cool Rog! I found such a smoking hot deal on the 3 pro I could not pass it up, or I would have bought a 4 too.

If anyone has drones or parts they want to sell, keep me in mind please. I am interested in fixing them up.

My buddy runs a company out of Red Deer doing arial acrage & commercial building pictures and video for real estate sales. Not sure what the name is off hand it's his side business, gave me a call last summer and told me to look out my back window and sure enough it was staring at me, guys at work had a good laugh when he showed the video on his phone the next day. it was inpressive he lived pretty far away and he said if he lost contact with it it automatically flys to a certain height then home! Same if the batteries get low........very cool

IF and I mean IF I get a few dozen hours in without lawn darting, I 'might' take it to Rupert with me, and get it to do a 'follow me' whilst salmon fishing. I am looking into pontoons right now, which 'may' help on a glass calm day.

IF I get a parachute system ordered and mounted,

IF I get a 'find me' module,

and IF I grow a giant set of brass nuggets.

Trouble with launching on X is when it loses signal it goes back to X even though the boat is now at X-240 + 180, it doesn't care!

Double anchor and hard on the throttle, second mate!!!

I don't have a lot of time on mine probably less than a dozen, but not a single bobble or even a hard landing. i have the same unit as you Ken, Phantom 3 Pro. I did the same research and came to the same conclusion as you did. My only question is the cold weather use of the unit. I need to figure out how to keep the batteries warm.

Now, the tracker.

Please keep the amazing pictures coming guys. I will add some when I get some worthy of showing.
