Default Kananaskis Ice Update!

Took a quick drive out to check ice levels on a few lakes. Here's what I found.
Also, for those who need to wet a line asap, Mount Lorette Ponds was stocked recently, and it looks as though the fish would even take a blank hook if presented properly. Lol

Sibbald Lake - April 27th - 2017

Sibbald Meadows Pond - April 27th - 2017

Barrier Lake (North) - April 27th - 2017

Barrier Lake (South) - April 27th - 2017 (That is open water)

Mount Lorette Ponds (East) - April 27th - 2017

Mount Lorette Ponds (West) - April 27th - 2017

Wedge Pond - April 27th - 2017

Lower Kananaskis Lake (North) - April 27th - 2017

Lower Kananaskis Lake (Spillway) - April 27th - 2017

Lower Kananaskis Lake (South) - April 27th - 2017

Upper Kananaskis Lake (South) - April 27th - 2017

Upper Kananaskis Lake (North) - April 27th - 2017

No Problem Fellas.
If I get a chance next week, I'll head up north and check Beaver, Mitchell, Strubel, Etc.

Just drove through the lot at Beaver over 60% iced over with over a dozen vehicles in the lot. Didn't seem like it was worth launching and competing for open water.

barrier and wedge are ice free
lower lake still has ice but I imagine it wont last much longer
upper lake still has a lot of ice but it's starting to show signs that it wont last much longer either

Lower kananaskis lake is half frozen, fishing was really good. Caught a bull trout and 3 cutties . Upper lake most of it is still frozen. Barrier lake, Mt Lorette and Wedge pond are all ice free. Be bear alert, we were visited by one on the spillway.

Thanks for the update.
Did you happen to go buy the boat launch on lower lake? I'm assuming it's not worth bringing a power boat for this weekend?

That is the part of the lake that it is still frozen.

I think the lake water level tends to be very low when the ice comes off, making the boat launch unusable for a few weeks. So even if this part wasn't frozen as per noviceguy, it will probably be a few weeks before boats can be launched, depending of course on what you have.

Thanks that is what I thought. Big difference from last year, since I had a 16 foot boat in both lakes on may long weekend last year.

Maybe ill bring the ice auger instead of the boat.

Went for a drive to Upper Lake today, still ice covered but it shouldn't be long.

The Lower lake is open but low, boats on the lake today.

Wedge is open but low, managed to get 2 nice size Graylings during our short stay. First time I've actually managed to catch one!

The bears were pretty active today.

Yes. Thank you for the update and pics. Would you mind sharing where G bear 163 was observed. Looks to be the shore line out from the Lower Lake Day use.

#163 came along the west shore line of the Lower Lake north to south and then headed up to the Upper Lake via the Inter Lake area. He was on a mission pausing to sniff the air at the top of the hill. I'm guessing he could smell the fire pits that were in use on the south side of the Upper Lake.

Cheers

There is a big boar grizz wandering around the Lower lake. He has a radio collar and the officers are monitoring his movements on a regular basis

was out in the boat on lower lake today.

drove to upper after to have a look.

upper lake still had more or less complete "ice" coverage.

ice in this case was little more than a mat of ice shards covering the water. tossed a couple rocks at it and they went right through. I expect it will be ice free in a couple of days at this point.
