Question Wainwright Hunting

I have a good chance of drawing for elk, cow moose and deer this season. I have been following the Wainwright harverst totals that shed posts every year and I am amazed by the number of animals that are taken every year. How come there are so many animals in the Wainwright area and what keeps them there.

Lots of hunters there
Success rates arent that high
150 plus deer hunters with 2 tags each per season

Both regulated and unregulated hunting is limited to only a few weeks per year, on the base, which helps. The success on moose is high, but on deer and elk, it is not exceptional.

If your going for moose go for the early hunts. We had to work very hard for our cow last year in the last season. And she one one of the few shot in the back half of the hunts.

The deer hunt can be tough but worth it. We got 3 in 2017, one tested positive for CWD.

No poaching makes a big difference.

Drew 2nd rifle last year with our group -- first timers.

Loved the hunt and experience.
Very well run.
Lots of guys yes, but if you stay away from the crowds and are willing to get your a** out of the truck you can find some nice animals.

Took home a nice mule buck -- cleared for CWD too.

Can't wait to go back.

It is a huge area.
And, like the surrounding land, it is great animal habitat.

By poaching you mean people that shoot animals without a license right?

Unregulated hunting is what I should have said, any animal shot without a tag.

I’m amazed the difference between inside the fence and outside. It really shows how our animal population “could” be.

I am confused by your comment. I think FN are allowed to harvest during the Wainwright base hunts. I believe there has been an uptick in recent years in FN participation in this hunt (please correct me if I am wrong).

Outside the base, I think that the FN impact would be far lower, as it is all private land that requires permission to access.

The reason I ask is that having lived in Wainwright for three years (moved away in 2015) my experience was that the deer hunting was far better outside the base than within. For moose I would say it was about equal.

Yes the Fn have been hammering the moose for a few years now. Sask through bc. Have come to harvest....they even managed to harvest a range patrol truck last year.....traditional weapons and all.
