Default My factory hunting rifle shoots under .75" all day, Really, Prove it!

This CHALLENGE for the shooters not prepared to attempt either of the 1/2" Challenges. The Rules are the Rules. No whining or complaining.
THE RULES
- Rifles are restricted to unmodified factory rifles with muzzle diameters under .75"
(No heavy barreled varmint rigs)
- No modifications to stock, trigger, etc. No aftermarket stocks or barrels.
- No rest restrictions, so from lead sled to off-hand.
- To post, must show five consecutive groups of three shots in each group--- on one target panel... with no group exceeding .75" measured C to C. Five groups only, not best five out of seven.
- Target distance must be 100M, but 100 yds is OK for shooters not into metric.
- Must post target picture showing all five groups under 0.75" with calipers showing measurment over the largest group. Write the size of each group under the group. Provide the five group average. No coins or other items which could hide a flier.
- Successful challengers must post a picture of the groups and the rifle as shot, including rest...bags...fence post...
NOTE: There are no caliber or bullet restrictions.
High end factory rifles including Cooper, HS Precision are permitted.
Shooting can take place during legal hunting hours and at any temperature to simulate real world conditions

I'm out, all my factory rifles are bedded, and have the triggers tweaked.

RULE CLARIFICATION/ Modification
Good point Dick
Tweaking factory triggers OK as long as it is only for pull weight, creep, and overtravel. No new trigger parts.
Glass bedding OK (some factory rifles Browning are bedded so this change will even the requirements.) But, no after factory pillars installed.

Well, I think my rifle could do it, but I'm also pretty confident that I personally couldn't do it. I have a Remington 700, Boone & Crockett edition (laminate, with fluted barrel), bedded and trigger tuned at Corlanes, chambered in 7mm08. I shot this 5 round group at Wapiti shooter's Club here, and it is probably the best group I have ever shot. I can't prove my rifle can meet this challenge, because frankly I don't have the shooting skills others on this board have. But I am pretty confident that with the right person behind it, my rifle could probably meet the challenge. I have a VX3, 3-9 x 40 on this rifle, and was shooting 140 gr Nosler partitions, Federal Premium factory loads (I don't reload yet). I'd honestly like to see what this rifle could do with a better man behind the trigger. I think that the best I could manage with your criteria is probably in the 1"-1 1/4" range, on a good day.

Yes, there is. I have a rifle or two that shows promise. I have one that has shown moments of brilliance. It may be that I have finally found my problem and the solution. Or maybe not.

If I can get some days off when it isn't blowing a gale, I may get a chance to shoot a group or two. I may be able to find out if my theory is right or if I am flailing in the dark.

I may even have a big bore that has shown promise.

So what do you guys think would be a realistic average for off the shelf hunting rifles? 1.5"?

I doubt there are any studies on factory fresh rifle groups, but I think the number of sucesses in to date in this thread would suggest there may a limited number that will do the repeat shot performance called for in this thread. I hear a fair number "under 1MOA claims" but haven't seen any go five in a row.

I'm still wondering when I'm going to get 15 shots at a deer off a bench.

I just posted this on another thread re Forbes rifles. There aren't 5 groups of three, only four but since all make the .75, with 2 different bullet weights, 2 bullet makers, 2 types of powder and 2 weights of each powder I think a little latitude on the fifth group would be fair.

308ultra.jpg

The rifle is a NULA by Melvin Forbes so border line whether it qualifies as a high end production like the Cooper. The target has 4 3 shot groups, 2 groups with 150 grain Hornady and different loads of Varget and two with 130 Grain Barnes and different loads of 4895. The target squares are 1/2" on a side. All 12 shoots were fired single shot, after barrel break in, with no barrel cooling time between the 12.

Looks like a decent shooter Dean2 with lots of potential to make the five groups required in the Challenge ---- especially if you narrow your loads to one bullet weight and powder. In posts #7 & #10, I also used "mixed" loads to shoot the groups.

Here is an excerpt from the Forbes website: That is why ultra Light Arms, in every sense, custom builds your Ultimate Rifle just for you. You can choose from four different right or left handed actions, and specify almost any caliber in the world. You pick from benchrest quality triggers, set up your specification. You decide upon your ideal Douglas premium Grade barrel, as to length, contour. While virtually any barrel available may be specified, Douglas premium Grade barrels are featured and recommended for Ultimate rifles.

If your NULA qualifies then certainly my CZ527 Varmint Kevlar would qualify. It is factory stock except for my choice of a Pac Nor Super Match barrel, 1.00" at the receiver tapering to 0.650" at the muzzle, and my choice of caliber. The top target features 12 consecutive shots, three each with different bullet/brass combinations using the same powder at different weights. I could take this target to the range and shoot a few more, three shot groups, using different powder/bullet/brass combinations into under 0.75". Not sure I could do it at 300 yards like the bottom target though as this is the only load using that "crappy" Remington brass.

This CHALLENGE is for factory production rifles, but for custom stuff, (where the action / trigger/ barrel / and stock can be ordered) the 1/2" Challenge is a great place to show your targets and gear. And, for those who want to give a bit more distance a whirl, there is the 300M Challenge. I will bump these.
Weather is great, lets see some shooting.

I get some time I will have to go shoot it. I am sure this NULA will easily make the 1/2" challenge for custom rifles. Two of the groups are in the .3s. With spaced three shot groups, and all same bullet weight and load it holds the groups pretty darn well.

The 1/2" Challenge is a bit trickier because it requires five consecutive, 5 shot groups. Even with a custom, the light contour barrels will take some patience to meet that standard.

Tried the challenge today , but fell short . Tho my rifle may be up to the task I certainly need more practice ..lol ,It's a good thing deer can't tell if it is hit within an inch of intended point of impact .Kudos to those that can meet the challenge .

Clarification - this CHALLENGE has no caliber restriction, so any factory hunting rifle (even a coyote gun ie: 223 / 22-250 etc) fits the criteria. just no heavy barrel varmint rigs

Looks like that Tikka is a shooter. My last 260 likes 130 Berger VLD(H) pushed by H4350. Nice shooting!

Bump as a follow up to the Range Day thread for those who wish to test the consistency of their hunting rig groups.

3 shot groups I might have a chance on with this.
I’ll be working on this as I also attempt the off-hand shooting challenge
Anyone else up for it?

I hope I don't get into trouble here, but here's my bone stock CZ-527. Five shot group at 102 yards with a sighter round.

I Think a lot of this success is due to the tailored hand loads.

I guess if the muzzle diameter is under .75 you're good to go.
