Default Christmas Baking/treats

Who is making what for christmas baking?

My cousin just told me his mom is in town and she is making kiffels.
Had to go look up the recipe. I have never attempted them myself.

Christmas eve, stinky and I will make some chocolate chip cookies for santa.

I'm not much of a cook - I can't even boil water without burning it, but here's my favorite "Christmas treats":

Chocolate coated almonds and macadamia nuts; roasted nuts (where ya need a nutcracker); Barcadi Gold with eggnog and nutmeg;
Bailey's Irish Cream with brandy;
Bol's cherry brandy.

ANYONE'S (especially my wife's) homemade shortbread cookies; and any homemade pastries, including all kinds of pies with homemade crusts made with LARD.

Default Butter tarts, shortbread cookies, marsipan (sp?)

Boss won't make Christmas cake as no one but me in family likes those dried fruits. Aunt said a week ago she was baking butter tarts and shortbread but she won't be here from coast until January so I have to wait. My wife is from Germany so marzipan (sp?) is a tradition.
Only thing special I buy as a treat for Christmas that I never buy at another time of year is Amoretta brandy for sippiing Xmas eve.
Have a great Christmas everyone!

So far Grandma has made Christmas cakes- month ago for aging. With booze in them. This week Fry pan cookies- sweet and gooey and yummmy, Whipped short bread cookies, Thimble cookies, Merry cookies with fruit cake ingredients, still to make-chuch windows which are made in a roll with colored miniature marshmallows to simulate the windows. Always great to have company as it means good eats. Oh, she will also be doing her fabulous air buns on Fri. She is noted for having "the best buns in Town" and makes a lot of them for Royal Purple functions and local fund raisers. Family members get to take a two to three pound cake home and if you hear a weeping as they go out the door, that would be me, but who am I to argue with tradition. At least I get the other three.

The wife is at it again today cause I already ate the whole "guest" supply.
Every year she makes nanaimo bars, ginger snap, sugar cookies, short bread cookies, butter tarts and chocolate balls.

It's really the only part of this overly commercialized season I like.
Now i must get back to my cave over Who Ville.

Funny you should say that - when my kids come over to help the wife bake, they always yell at me with: "DON'T EAT 'EM ALL THIS TIME, DAD!!!"

Can't understand what makes 'em do that!

I am really going to miss my Moms treats this X-mas. It's the little things like this that make it tough.
With all that is going on, I can not understand why this thread has me upset.

Enjoy your time with each other people.

Jamie

Mmmmmm, Marzipan. Chocolate covered, of course. Unless it's in the middle of a Stollen. What the heck is a kiffel?

Kiffles are an eastern European cookie of sorts.
They are buttery, light and flakey. The ones I grew up with have a walnut fluffy filling.
Once they are baked you sprinkle them lightly with icing sugar.

Default Christmas baking - Cheesies

This recipe has always been Daddy baking in our family. The girls have long ago married, now making them for their own circle of friends.

1 cup Butter softened
8 oz. package Imperial Cheese softened
dash of salt
1 tsp. Cayenne
1 tsp. Worchestershire sauce
1 1/2 cups flour
4 cups Rice Crispies

Cream butter and cheese together, add seasonings , beat in flour until thoroughly mixed, add rice crispies and fold in with a wooden spoon.
Make walnut sized balls, or to your taste and flatten with a fork dipped in cold water.
Bake at 350 deg. for 12 mins. in my oven - adjust to your own doneness, lightly browned. Makes about 4 dozen.

I never met anyone, man, woman or child who did not like these.

Let's see.The wife makes homemade nuts and bolts, poppycock, butterscotch confetti, rice crispy with chocolate squares, pretzel with cashews squished into a melted rolo ontop, shortbread cookies, ammonia cookies. We give out tins of these but she left one sort of square out, everyone complained so she is gonna have to make a batch. We made a few dozen perogies on the weekend and there will be a big platter of surprise dip(creamcheese, sourcream, salsa, green onions, can shrimp, grated cheese)Oh and who can forget the homemade butter tarts!
Know wonder I have to start a diet and lose a pile of weight after New Years.

Default Cheesies - revision

the glass of wine may have got me typing faster than thinking -
I put one tsp. of Tabasco (more or less to taste) not cayenne in the recipe
Sorry for the confusion.

My sister and I are trying to make to the identical pumpernickel our late mother used to make.

We have not achieved the same quality yet.

Practice Practice as mom used to say. That includes hunting and fishing.

Hang in there Jamie , when I lost Grandpa there last fall Christmas hasn't been the same for me either . Hopefully it gets better . I know how your feeling . I hope you and your family has a very merry Christmas .

.................................................. .................................................. ....
As for treats I like these magic bar things the mother makes , of course cheesecake , and the odd chocolate that my sister makes . I gotta figure out how to make butter tarts because them are my favorite . But would sooner have Turkey sandwiches then all the sweets . After all im a MEATETARIAN

Yes it will be a rough Christmas for many of us for after a 2 year courageous battle my mom lost the battle with Alzhiemers disease Dec 4th. It won't be the same without speaking to her this year but she was always an advocate for children so if there are children in heaven I am sure they have a new daycare worker. We have many great memories of her smiles surrounded by family before the disease affected her quality of life.

Butter tarts are the most important Xmas baking for my family, I made 120 butter tarts! Shortbread raspberry squares, Shortbread cheese cake tarts, sugar cookies, peanut crisp squares and 10 of my version of Tortiere meat pies. I don't buy gifts anymore but I give baking to the closet family members, especially my bros.

Poppy cock, peanut brittle, butter tarts, corn flake drops, peanutbutter marshmellow squares (I like it all!) and this year my wife tried her first go at lefsa. Her dad is from Norwiegen decent and he said it turned out great. I like it but not my favorite
