Coyote Activity
Sure seeing a ton of them moving around in this brutal cold. Little early for breeding though?

I'm seeing fairly heavy breeding activity already I called in a pair yesterday that was darn near glued at the hip.

Tough going out there now without a sled--too much snow to get into the fields---and cold as hell.

I called in 5 on Monday and just the one pair but they were pretty tight. Two of the others were big Toms running solo. Everything came to the rabbit save one who fell for cotton tail. Coyote vocals haven’t been producing for me in this snap.

The males have been roaming for about a week now. The females will be going into heat very soon. They tend to move more in colder weather as well. I don't know how effective calling them would be up this way as the snow is +2' deep. I've been making skidoo trails for them to travel on for a couple of weeks now.

Coyotes need lots of food when it's cold so they will be up and running. I remember taking a drive back in the day when it was -40. I saw more than 40 yappers that morning on a back road drive between Leduc and Camrose. 13 in the biggest pack.
Even near Rollyview back then my best day of trapped coyotes and shooting coyotes was during one of the coldest days of winter. 14 in one day.

What is interesting about coyotes is they can stop their pregnancy for up to a year and resume the pregnancy when conditions or the stress improves.

They are definitely taking longer to come with the snow conditions. Fastest response was 8 minutes and longest was crowding the 40 minute mark on Monday. The skidoo trails work wonders if planned in advance like you’ve been doing. Wish I had been doing the same.

Actually I was just talking with coyoteman around noon today and he was telling me exactly that. I never knew that it was a possibility that coyotes could do that. And I found him very knowledgeable.

Oh my
Not to early To be paired up.
We've been getting some decent snows here in northern MN latley.
It's always kinda fun to go out soon as the snow stops but over the years, I've found it's best to wait a few days.

Went out today and figured the snow it too deep for them to come running in like other cold snaps. Tried female howl and cotton tail. Nothing at all except a good work out walking through snow.

Some mammals that undergo embryonic diapause include rodents, bears, armadillos, mustelids (e.g. weasels and badgers), and marsupials, (e.g. kangaroos). Some groups only have one species that undergoes embryonic diapause, such as the roe deer in the order Artiodactyla.[2]
I knew about the animals listed, just have never heard of any canines.

Bottom of page 279 has a list of animals that can have delayed implantation.
https://books.google.ca/books?hl=en&...oyotes&f=false
I learned about this when I took the up trapping years ago.

Odd that coyote isn't on the list. I looked a little more and found another list that doesn't mention coyotes either. One mentions red fox. I know I heard coyote from who ever told me but maybe they were mistaken. I heard about delayed pregnancy 40 years ago.
Looking at the list I didn't realize there were so many other animals in this category. https://www.cbs.umn.edu/sites/cbs.um...%20mammals.pdf
Anyone that wants to know more can google it themselves.

I’ve never heard of this embryonic diapause causing for broth to be suspended a full year and don’t believe that’s possible. It’s common in mammals to suspend birth till the favourable season..but for us that’s spring exactly when the coyotes will give birth...but they won’t be waiting till the year after. I was unable to find any scientific data supporting coyote embryonic dispose (basically suspending birth). If anyone does find something please post it or start a new thread.
Ps yes cold will have dogs moving

They are responding awesome. Went out today and at first howl I had responses and within 10 seconds of setting down the jackrabbit call I had 3 coming in from different areas. Killed one and flubbed the shot on a second. Only about 6-8 inches of snow so they can and are getting around great.

Up here it’s not so much that the coyotes can’t get around it’s I can’t get my fat carcass through the snow.
