300,306 or 308 Antlered Mule Deer?
Hello Guys,
I have P9 Antlered Mule Deer and P4 Antlerless Mule Deer priority and I would absolutely love to get a huge mule deer on my wall. I am beginning to dream about next year and I'm looking at 300, 306 or 308. I would like to go down and camp for the whole week and hopefully return with 2 mule deer.
Unfortunately with a young family and living in Edmonton extensive scouting isn't going to be possible. With that in mind I would really appreciate any tips as to which WMU to draw in. I'm leaning towards 308 due to higher amounts of crown & lease land but I know there's some huge deer in 300 & 306.
I love hiking and doing more backcountry style hunts.
PM's appreciated. :-)

Thats a long trip, I would say there are big mule deer in every zone, personally I would pick a zone I could be in every day, not just a week.

Exploring new areas is all part of the fun/experience. They’re all good zones for mulies. Do some e scouting on google earth and pick the area that looks the most fun to you.

Take your young family for a camping trip down south in the summer and do a bit of scouting. Waterton and area is easy on the eyes and lots of beautiful places to camp. The family will love it and they will want to return. Out of the three you mentioned I would pick 302 as i think it would be the easiest one to get permission in. 300 is a good one for game but if you aren't local you will have a struggle getting permission, especially if its the day before you need it. Same with 306, tough for short notice permission.

You pass a lot of good MD areas on your way to those listed.

My mistake, you did not have 302 in for consideration.

Far from an expert here, but have hunted fair bit in each.
I think 306 is a great mule deer zone, however as previously mentioned access will be a bit tougher with much more private, less lease land. There is some lease land at the very north end of unit, and the owners seemed reasonable to deal with.
Hunted 308 a lot this year, and saw tons of mule deer, but not a lot of big ones (could have just been me though.... did see one really big one). However on the positive tons of lease land (also Bob Creek area) and a great unit if you prefer backcountry/hiking style hunts.
Tough to really go wrong between 306/308, both beautfiful areas

2x. I wouldn't waste my time in those zones. There are a way better zones closer to where you live.

Agreed. I'd pack some kids in the car and head East from Ed.
Do some glassing and knock on doors. I saw a good share of great heads east of Beaumont and towards Bashaw back when I was in the patch.

After quite a bit of research I'm leaning towards 138 or 308. Both have limited tags. 138 has bigger bucks but later and more restricted season and I like the foothills more. 308 has fewer big deer but still plenty but has an earlier season, easier access and prettier country.
Decisions, decisions.... thanks for dreaming with me guys and giving some pointers.
