Started with a 30-06
Then went to a 270 win
Kept both those rifles and went through 243, 300wm, 300wsm, 375H&H, 338wm, 45-70
Ive have got rid of everything but the 30-06, 270 and 45-70
I love the 45-70 for the elk rut hunt in deep cover.
Everything else my 270 usually gets the nod. I am confident with it out to 500 yards. Dead is dead and it has accounted for many deer, moose and elk from 5 - 480 yards.
The 30-06 stays with me out of pure nostalgia...but it is just as effective as the 270.
I killed animals with all the above magnums while I had them and never once felt like I had any advantage over my tried and true 270.

new guns
Hunted with 358 norma and 338wm for many years before stepping back to the venerable old '06. Last year, shot my WT buck and cow moose with 7x57 and found shooting it very enjoyable. Did the job just fine (I still preach heavy-for-caliber bullets; 175 gr. in this case!). I am suffering from a torn disc, and now a messed up shoulder needing surgery, so a bit lighter gun is definitely more comfortable.
My 2019 general elk was taken with a .405 winchester, but that's kinda "on the edge" of magnumitis!

When I was doing my research for my do-it -all rifle i had settled on the 7LRM. I wanted a bigger more efficient cartridge. but after talking to shooters and gunsmiths, I found the 6.5 SAUM and that led to the 6.5 SS.A beauty of a true short action that I mag feed. I shoot the 140 gr bullets and now with the new 156 gr bullets, i'll be trying those out when i run out of the 140 gr. the 156 gr VLD's at over 3000 fps will be good elk medicine.

My main rifle is a 270WSM so not a significantly overpowered magnum. I also keep a couple of 270Win and a 30-06 that continue to fill my freezer. And my puny, non-magnum 6MM Rem is a dream to shoot, amazingly accurate, and has put at least 250 animals in the freezer.

No, but he does eat gophers and Jack Rabbits, so the count rises quickly.

I went from a 300WM to 300WSM and then to 30-06. On 30-06 I was initially loading 180gn bullets than went to 165gn and than to 150gn. I think I am getting old. The next step might be a 270 loaded with 130gn bullets.

Never got the Magnum itch, aside for 44 Mag 629 S&W stainless in 6” barrel, for forestry work in remote areas. For rifles, M70 .270 has always been my go to rifle. Have shot buddies 7mmSTW, 300WSM and I’m good... enhancing the flinch not really on the bucket list.
Son bought me a B78 high wall in .243 and is the current pet, albeit not shot game with it just yet. Also have a Win 1994 trapper 44MagAE which is fun to mess with.
For my needs (North American Game), have never felt under gunned (.270) and the mix of booolets that are available now days I just don’t feel the need.
Pew pew..

if you shot 5 critters every year for 50 years and you started hunting when, at 12 years old??

Actually he would still be 45 critters short. Needs 5 a year for 50 years.

No you didn't, my quote still shows the 41 years. You're caught!!! .
All in fun Cat. A little bored this afternoon so just playing around a bit. Normally I couldn't be bothered responding to obvious BLOW HARD stuff that Raised by Lying Wolves usually posts.
All good. Have a great one.

That .338 Federal is one that I still keep thinking I need. It just seems right.
Anyway, I started hunting with a Remington 788 in .308 and it worked just fine. Then I saw a beautiful Boone & Crockett edition Model 700 in 7mm-08 and had to get it (and sold the 788 cuz $ was tight then). Love that 7mm-08, and taken about 15 deer, elk, moose with it. And a couple coyote too.
$ got better, and I got a good deal on a Model 700 XHR in .300 WM, so got it. Pounded some elk, moose, deer, and a couple coyotes with it. It worked too.
Then got a nice old BDL in 7mm RM, and I really like that cartridge too. Some deer and a coyote got tipped over with it.
I like them all, but mostly when I reach in the safe I grab the 7mm-08 now. It's a lighter rifle, and it seems to kill things just as dead as my magnums. But I'd still be ok with any of them. Just like that light short action -08.

My main "go to" gun, although still technically a Magnum is the 257 BEE. Seems to reach out and knock down whatever she is pointed at. My son "inherited" my last one, a Accumark, so went and bought another (a cheap Vangaurd). I was going to "trade him back" but after Dean helped me bed it, this thing went from shooting great to shooting cloverleafs (if the wind and I cooperate) ..... I Love it.
Used to shoot bigger cartridges like 300 BEE, 300WM and 30-06 but unless I'm after moose, the 257 BEE gets the walk in the woods.

I only got the 7mm for the action with the idea to rebarrel it to 6.5PRC. But now, after reading about them, maybe not. I don't know yet as that will be a ways in the future anyway.

What have you read about the 6.5?

What did you ever shoot with the 460? I'd love to hear how it did.

Unfortunately just paper. The .378 was much worse. Older Mark V with lighter contour barrel and no brake. Just wicked.

Started out with a 30-06 for my deer gun
Moved to a .270 and loved that gun, It got stolen
replaced it with a 7mm
replaced that with a 270 wsm, which I really like, I mean it says magnum but is it really?

1st rifle Tikka 7mm Rem Mag (sold)
2nd rifle Cooper Jackson Game 7mm-08 (sold) regret
3rd rifle Cooper Jackson Hunter 7mm Rem Mag (became a 338-06) long story.
4th rifle Fierce Edge 280ai (trade for Sako 75 6.5x55)
5th rifle Nula 280ai (still have)
6th rifle Cooper Jackson Hunter 338-06 (still have)
7th rifle Kimber Montana 7mm wsm (still have)

Not Binary
It need not be binary. It can be both and. I have a 6.5x47 Lapua and a 300 PRC. Both are fun to shoot. I will admit the 300 has a muzzle brake.

That they are a great round. They are basically a 6.5 magnum. They will generally have a higher velocity than the same bullet in something like the 6.5CM, but less barrel life. Since I already have a 6.5CM, there may not really be any benefit to me getting one.
Nothing bad with the round.

i ditched a 338 win mag 35 yrs ago and went back to a 270.....it has killed everything i ever pointed it at.

I use on the small end 6.5 PRC and 308.
On the uper end, 7STW, 338 & 45-70.
I've never been one to spout BS about "this is all you need" or "this is a minimum required".
I use them all petty much equally and they all work but, some are better in certain situations.
A fast heavy bullet will make a big exit hole more often than a small slow one.
I'd prefer to see a big exit hole even when I don't need one.
