Default 2019 Crawling Valley

Spring is here and my itch for fishing is nearing a rash...haha

Has anyone been out to Crawling Valley?

Conditions: Is there still ice or open water? How about the road in?

Thanks,

Wide open and road in is fine - it opens May 8 for fishing.

Although the way the weather has been lately, it may freeze over again.

Have to believe summer is coming, hauling the boat and motorhome to CV tomorrow and hope to be fishing opening day. It still seems a shame that pike fish tacos have been replaced by smokies.

Was out on Thursday the 9th.

Rolled up to the office to register my boat; friendly staff took my info.
The dock is in excellent shape.
The visibility was about 8 feet.
Weather nice, no wind to speak of.

Saw one Walleye; caught 22 pike...buddy caught biggest of his life, over 22 lbs.....and she was gently returned.....

Down side:
There was a hatching of black gnats or something very small and similar? They had a slight white hue to their wings...seemed like millions swarmed us all day and all over the lake....unreal.....

That is a stellar pike, far bigger than I have seen come out of there, I haven’t seen anything bigger than 13 and that is from fishing there a half decent amount a few years back and going to the ice fishing tourney for years

They are in there, we pulled out an 18 lb one a couple of years ago. The annual May long weekend bug hatch is in full swing. You have to keep reminding yourself that this is the base of the food chain as you try and avoid breathing them.

The funny thing about CV is that since the killing of pike was outlawed, they seem to be getting bigger and more of the bigger ones!! Weird eh!!

I agree there are now more fish a bit longer than 63 cm but my catch rates for big fish haven't really changed over the years. Perhaps this will also happen as less 63 to 67 cm fish are harvested but there may also be more competition for food and then more medium sized fish and less large fish. I don't know that answer but time will tell.

Do you guys see the whitefish surfacing for these black bugs (chironomids). Might be fun to do some fly fishing there

Spent a day chuckin' spoons and cranks in shallow water. Very good day of pike fishing.

If you're driving back to Calgary through the res, watch out for the tracks. They seem worse that before, especially the tracks by the Boy Chief.

Train tracks.
I slow right down when crossing them. Really nasty on the transom if you don't!

Fished June 05

The water was murky 100 yards out from the boat ramp, then it settled out. Viability was still only in the 3ft range.

Caught 2 Walleye and 17 pike...nothing to write home about on the size.

Now on the other hand, when we arrived the parking lot there were 4 rescue boats and the RCMP. We approached and asked if this was a training exercise and the said, it was the real deal as a guy fell in on the evening of the 4th.

With about 20 emergency response personnel on hand and all the equipment; it all turned out to false.

Walter White at CV?
Spent some time up towards the north end. Saw this motorhome parked a couple hundred yards offshore. Not a soul in sight. Buddy says it looks like it's right out of Breaking Bad. Crappy phone picture.

Fishing was good. Very calm day.

June 17;

Nice day, the water viability 8'-10'.

What was cool about that is you could watch the pike follow your hook in and at times, actually watch the strike. We spent a lot of time in the weeds for that very experience.

The Walleye were slow and Pike as usual.

July 22

Slow day for everything and the weeds are getting higher by the day. Viability wasn't good either with that green slime in the water. It is makes it hard to see those prop busting rocks, glad I didn't hit any.

The weatherman was correct this time.....it was hot like the forecast said it would be... all in all a good trip.
