this sucker had alot of white on him, and the feet were feathery white. LOL@feathery, is that even a word? if not...it is now

It is definetly is a horned owl, a juvenile for sure. Had lots around our farm and had to put one down after it raided the chicken coup. Those eyes look through you, not at you, brrrr, lol

If F&W can't identify a red-tailed hawk from a specimen in hand then we certainly have a problem. Maybe you should go back to the office and tell him to get his bird book out and look in it once in a while. If he can only tell you it is a hawk (there are more than one type out there) he (or she I suppose) needs to brush up. And you need to calm down.

The owl looks like a great horned to me.

A boreal owl looks alot like a northern hawk owl but is smaller and has a different striping pattern on the chest.

Yes I agree now it is a great horned. Sure don't look like mine but he looks like the one in my book. Must be a young one. Mine must be an old one. 11 species of owls in Alberta.

Great Horned owls have various color patterns, same as lots of birds.
