yeah just be very aware of the cost vs value, i did that once and bought a shimano FX series rod reel combo for $30 got it all set up and worked fine but didn't expect much. 1 year later ish i hooked into a good fat pan size rainbow and set the hook and started reeling only the reel would not turn. scrambling to get the reel to work but failed so ended up hand bombing the line in to get the fish. moral is its nice to go cheap and affordable but not to the point where it will break down and ruin a fishing trip. i ended up replacing the reel with another one but in the $40-50 range from a fishing store instead of a department store. just keep an eye out for sales and a reputable brand

Thanks for the tip OP. I am lucky to live very close to a walmart and can pop by every day if I feel like it. It is AMASSING the deals you can get if your there at the right time. Once they decide to liquidate old stock to make room for new, they don't fool around. Sometimes a brand name item like Bushnel, Browning, etc. that was selling last week for 80.00 is now going out the door 2 or 3 bucks.
I would never look down my nose at someone with a keen eye for a great bargain.

I know not everyone has the budget to spend big bucks on equipment, and sometimes people might only fish once or twice a year ....... but ......

The AX series is the cheapest reel Shimano makes. You are likely to be very disappointed with it and I would suggest that spending $40-$50 for a spinning reel will give you a much, much better reel.

A average quality spinning reel is probably $60-$90 and something that will last you for years. Something you could pass down to the kids and grandkids.

I agree with EZM,

Sometimes you can't go cheap, even if you think it's a good deal.

Quality comes with a price.

I also agree with Waterninja,

You gotta know when to look.

Although not from Walmart,
My latest acquisition is a One piece Shimano Clarus I paid $40 for.

Cheap is ok if you don't fish a lot and your gear isn't bring stressed (ie big fish). But the best advice I could give is go just above the cheapest, a $40 reel gets you into a fairly ok piece of gear..... If you know how to 'fish' gear is secondary!

I guess what that means is if you know how to "fish" all you really need is a hook and some line that you an spool around a bottle
