Default .303 bullet question

I was looking at wholesale sports website and I noticed speer makes .303 bullets in .311 and hornady makes them in .312, both listed as 7.7mm Jap. Is there any real difference in the two, advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks in advance

I believe it's due to the loose tolerances during the war when enfields were made. I've also heard that you can use .30 cal (.308) bullets. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Some people have used .308 bullets, depending on the Enfield the bore can be anywhere from .310 to almost .315!
.311 is the most cmmon bullet however, but .312 will not make a big difference.
the biggest difference difference in tolerances , and Speer builds good bullets , as does Hornady.
You would have to test both to see which one shoots better.

You "can" use .308 cal if your bore is sized to it. Most bores in .303's are .311-.313 though. Some even as far as .316. Your best bet to figure out what you need, take your .303 to a qualified gunsmith to check the bore size

Correct me if I did the wrong thing but I "slugged" the barrel on my .303 and it was quite easy. Drove a lead fishing weight through with a wooden dowel and then measured it with a micrometer/

Hey Cat, any issues with over pressure using a .312 bullet in a .303? I know it's only a hundreth of an inch but it's a pretty old cartridge...

Default slugging

It's a little more sporting slugging an odd numbered groove barrel and getting an accurate measurement.Harold

Hmm, should have thought of that, it is a 5 groove. I think I'll take it in and get a pro's .02$

You need a 72 degree vee block or a micrometer with a vee anvil. A tapered plug gauge will also give a reasonably precise measurement but only of the very edge of the bore. Ring gauges offer an alternate means of measuring groove diameter. Leeper
