Default 12g barrel length?

Currently looking at the Beretta A400 with kick off. I notice they come with 26-30" barrels. It will be used for clays, birds and fun. I'm thinking shorter barrel for the bush. What are the pro's to having a 30"?

Default theory

In theory the longer the shot colume and wad remain in the barrel under pressure from the powder the higher velocity the shot should reach.

I have always gone by the guideline that 26 in the bush for ruffed grouse or prairie for sharptails is lighter and quicker pointing. All my duck guns are versatile with a 28 barrel so can be used for any purpose as the middle of the road option. My dedicated goose guns have had 30 -34 inch barrels.

Only difference in shotgun barrel length is how the gun swings. It makes no difference in velocity or pattern. Play with them and see which one swings the best for you.

a 30 inch will give you a shorter lead space and a more complete stable follow through.

Contrary to what is and will be posted, a longer barrel is the norm these days in all knowlegeable shooting circles with the exception of the barnyard pigeon shooting Churchill crowd.

Perhaps with breech loaders and in waterfowl blinds but for a do-it-all auto loader, I'd say the 28" is king.

I will concede to that given the type of gun.

My sporting clays coach still likes a 26 inch Browning over and under. He has become quite friendly with my Browning 325 28 inch though.

Shooting upland in the bush a short barrel is an advantage for ease of swing , and for open shooting in fields and blinds a longer barrel is usualy prefered for the longer sight plane. Woodcock shooters prefer a barrel that is very short, 22" to 26" max, Most duck goose shooters will prefer a 28 or a 30".

I have studied the short barrel versus long barrel phenomenon for many years and have come to this very decisive point of view - I love them all, be they 26" or 36"!!
Mind you, swinging a 30" SXS hammer double in close quarters can take some doing , but it can be done.
At the same time, unless you are accomplished at it, you are going to over swing a 5lb. 26" SXS on a long crossing shot!!
I know of three AA skeet shooters who use 30" barrels, and an American national Sporting champ that shoots a 30" barrel gun in 3 gauges.
I have been known to swap a light 26" barreled gun halfway through a round of skeet for a 30" barrelled gun and can shoot just as lousy with one as the other!!
It's all good, just enjoy what you are shooting!

I ain't no pro but I figure its easier to point a long stick than a short one.Havin said that I must admit to daydreaming about a sxs with 27" tubes for huntin ruffies..

I just ordered a BPS with a 26" over the 28" since I'll be shooting from a canoe often and space is a premium. I might pick up a 28" barrel for it down the road though.

My choice in barrel length has developed over the years.

When I started shooting at geese. I preferred the 36"
When I got older and went to upland birds, I preferred the 26"
Now that I'm older still and sitting in the weeds shooting at geese again, I prefer the 36"

I guess what I'm trying to say is my preference in shotguns is about the same as my preference in women.

36..26..36.

It really doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

Default probably not as true as in the old days

Rick, I believe they have made powders more efficient in the last 30 years so the powder is probably all burned in a 25-26 inch barrel but in the old days it seemed that long barrels increased the velocity. Powders were probably less efficient then so a short barrel did not have time to fully burn the powder. Maybe it is all an old wives tale. Regardless most of my shotguns are versatile with the 28 inch barrel including my 28 gauge.

In about 14 inches actually for most modern shotgun shells.

Default stil not convinced TJ

if you can lose 100 feet per second in rifle from 24 -26 inch barrels using modern powder I stil belive that there is some consequence to a shorter barrel shotguns. Might not be significant but there has to be a change in velocity.

We're talking two very different powder types....kinda like comparing gasoline and diesel.

Thanks for your advise guys, went with the 28". Took it out today, and as Cat said, missed equally well with everything I put through it lmao.
Unreal soft recoil and fast follow up shots, after 200rnds was ready for more, can't say that about the old 870. After i installed the longer butt pad, it fit like a glove, swings great, put 3rds into the same pieces of clay and turned um to dust. Very happy.
Cheers
