Default Your Favorite Unpopular Guns

If you hunt with something other than a bolt action repeater lets hear about it. Maybe it is a bolt action but something not well known. I like to hunt with my new NEF in .243. Up till now my big game gun has been a Model 99 Savage in 300 savage. Lets hear about your favorite unconventional big game rifle.

Someday I'll find a nice Remington Model 8
(PM me if you've got one to sell!)
Until then a plain old, vanilla FN bolt action will have to do

Default Winchester 1895

I like the Winchester 1895 quite a bit. It's what I take out when I'm not in the mood for a scoped bolt action.........

Default Mdl 94 .30-30

This year was the first season I ever shot a white-tail with iron sights and I liked it. More than likely will try to repeat it next season and maybe try it for something bigger. I've been shooting a scoped 7mm RM for almost 20 yrs.

Thumbs up

I don't think there's anything unpopular about my Bolt Action Rifle other than the caliber which is widely unknown. My Little rifle is a Ruger M77mkII Compact rifle with stainless barrel & action mounted in a Grey/Black Laminated wood stock, my chosen caliber is .260 Rem (made from a .308 case necked down to 6.5mm). I wish it had a detachable clip magazine rather than just a hinged floorplate, otherwise I have no complaint.

This photo was taken on my 50th birthday this season October 1, 2007.

I like my 280 REM (LOTS) Its not a very popular caliber, the rifle however (browning stalker) is a fairly popular rifle. Not that many people out there using a 280.

In bolt actions I have hunted with a .264 win. mag. that isn't too popular. and a 7X57 mauser. I have killed a few critters with a pump (Rem. 7600) in .35 whelen. I shot my first moose and my last moose with a Lever gun, a Sav. 99 in .300 sav. In muzzle loaders I have killed deer and pronghorn with an Enfield musket replica in .58 cal., a CVA double barrel .54 cal express rifle and a T/C encore 209X50.

My latest "unusual" hunting rifle is a semi-auto, Win. M100 in .284 Win.

Ever heard of the diminutive 17 Remington? That's one of the calibers I enjoy shooting coyotes with and you know the other one. Good thread BTW, Hunter1!

Since FLATTENING a bull moose with my MarlinXLR .45-70 Govt about 10 days ago, it's become a new favorite, but one of the neatest rifles I have is a mid-1950's long barreled Savage 99, rotary clip with a shot counter in the classic .250-3000. With the heavier Silvertips and iron sights (haven't even considered scoping it, cause it just ain't designed for it) I can still drop deer flat with it out to 200 yards or so. Ammunition is now referred to as .250 Savage, but I like the real name. I swear my .22WMR CZ is louder and has at least as much recoil - when you shoot the old Savage, you have to laugh and wonder if anything came out the barrel, it's so quiet.

Great stuff guys. This is just what I was looking for. Its funny how we get attached to certain rifles or calibers even though some others might never dream of using them. I know when my brother and I started coyote hunting we both only had our big game rifles. He had a winchester in 300WSM and I had my 300 Savage. Then my brother borrowed a friends sako in .222 and now is strongly considering getting one despite all the other more powerful varmint calibers out there. Funny how this goes.

Yes you do get sentimental about some rifles. I have a old M1917 Remington that was my fathers and his before that and will be my sons after me. Believe me it has been well used and has brought down alot of big game. Modern by no means, and not much value except-------------its a family tradition.

Thanks, guys. She's a real nice gun and even better looking in person. I did go hunting once this fall with her, but had to cut things short when it looked like I might be running into a grizzly. She didn't shoot too badly, using iron sights - 3.5 to 4 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards which was pretty decent considering further load development could be done. Looking forward to doing that this winter and next spring so I can take her deer, elk and black bear hunting in 2008.

I can't claim credit for the picture as it was the previous owner who took it - i haven't been able to take any pictures that are as good as what he did, but I'm working on it.

As I mentioned, I also have a 1886 in 45-90 that bubba did a few things to and am in the process of gathering parts to restore this gun to original configuration - it will look similar to the 40-82, but have it's own unique look.

In spite of the restored 1886s , I'm still looking for nice old original 1886s as well. Anything in 33 WCF, 38-56, 38-72, 40-65, 40-82, 45-70, 45-90 and 50 Express

My stevnes 200, 358 win. Rebarreled and restocked, with a leupold 1.5-5 perched atop. Deadly little slugger, if only i could find more than coyotes to shoot it at, lol. (the coyotes get a 158 gr JHP, which tends to violently expand at rifle velocities)

I also have a 280 Rem, but i think the Mrs may have taken that one over

Just picked up a 300 WSM, and once i get some "sit down time" with it, i will decide if it is going to stay a 300, or eat some of my money and becme a 6.5, or perhaps a 25 WSM wildcat. Not too many of those floating around i would presume.

6.5X303 Epps IMP. on a Martini action.
9.3X74R in on Tikka O/U action.
6.5WSSM on a Browning single shot action.
.577 Snider/Enfield
218 Bee on a Stevens 44 action ( small stuff)
22K Hornet on a Stevens Marksman tip down ( more small stuff)

I have a few more, but can't think of them at the moment.
All these rifles are hunters BTW.....

Oh, and Dick 284, you're welcome, but I really think you should let the kid's have that rifle!

I love the .280 as well. I actually have three boxes of ammo from the 80's that are marked and headstamped 7mm-06.(talk about unpopular!!) I don't think any guns were ever marked that way but a little ammo obviously was. I won't be using it up anytime soon! My Sako Classic in .280 Rem:
