My favorite two calibers are 270 and 308 they are both in the middle. The 308 uses the same bullets as your 30.06 but it has a shorter case allowing lighter shorter rifles to be made for it. The loss of velocity is negligble. My favorite rifle in 308 is the remington model 7 in stainless with synthetic stock. You can carry this rifle all day with one hand. The remington pump 760 is a fast shooter in 308. The 308 is a pleasure to shoot as the recoil in much less than your 30.06.
A guy named Jack Oconner who was a famous gun writer traveled the world and killed almost every species with the 270. The 270 is the same case as your 30.06 but the bullet is only 27 caliber instead of 30 caliber. It is very acurate at longer ranges and has less recoil than the 30.06. It will drop almost all the bigame you have in Alberta. I would question it on big bear but I dont realy have much experience with bear. Ammo is cheap for theese two calibers so you can practice alot. If you ever get into reloading the siera hollow point boatail in 140 grains will drop deer in their tracks.

what are you planning on hunting with it? I would go with a 7mm. your comparing a .264 to a .284 cal. better b.c. you get better bullet selection with the 7mm. Loaded with a 160 or my favorite 162gr. they are perfect for anything from deer to moose. Plus the magmum punch you get if your doing any long distance shooting. they are a perfect all around calibre.

id say go smaller or bigger as you got quite a bit covered.

if that was all i had, id get a .338 win mag, or larger, OR, id go under like a .204 or a 22-250. but thats me your 30-06 will take all the deer/moose/elk you can shake a stick at, and your .243 is good for deer and yotes, so.......... how about evena really nice kick ***** highend .22lr or a 17hmr?

round and round the great debate continues
that 6.5 should park you right in the middle

I am with -NDN- either bigger or smaller about the only two rounds that add anything to the inventory are 25-06 or 270 short mag long range deer capability, but only just barely in real performance.

IMO You have all bases covered from coyotes to moose.

Going bigger or smaller is good advice....

How about a shotgun, or rimfire.... I love my .17 HMR fo plinking and gophering...... maybe a 12 gauge for som waterfowl....

.2755 is exact middle.... 270 is .277 calibre.... but you could take your 30-06 load with 150's and you are very close to performance.....

Maybe you should aproach your shopping in a different way. Pick out the gun and action you realy like and then see what calibers that its made in. Pump rifles like the remington are the hotest trend in Pennsylvania nowadays. I dont know if semi autos are legal up your way but in states like maine and New York where they are legal to hunt with, they are very popular. I will never buy a gun again that isnt stainless steel as Ive had too much damage occur from rain on my blued rifles.

Thats good advice.

I went to a gun auction and I saw these lovlies. I fell for the Win. M100 in .284 so I bought her.

Sometimes the rifle action and model is what hooks you and the cartridge it comes in is secondary.

Your 30-06 willl cover pretty well everything for hunting.

Have you considered a dedicated varmint rig? Considering what you already own, something like a .204 Ruger or a .223 REM with a nice scope would be my choice. You can hunt coyotes year round with them and they are a lot of fun for target shooting at the range too. Cheap to shoot as well.

time to go for a fun gun or project gun imo...your basis are already covered....get a lever or an auto-loader... what types of hunting do you do?...maybe something very specific to one of your favorites?
