I think it's going to cause a lot of honest people to lawyer up or risk financial ruin vs taking responsibility. Harsher penalties way earlier on is what I'd like to see.

$50,000 will not bring anyone back and if the circumstances of the case warrant pursuing criminal charges then go that route.

I've walked around Toronto a bit and I can tell you it's worth your life to cross a street even when the drivers are not on their cell phones!

Although I think there needs to be stiffer penalties, at $50K I think you'll see an increase in hit and runs.

It would be different if the fines were payable to the victims or their families - but I think Governments have simply turned the justice system into a revenue generating stream.
