Default 870 slug accuracy

I took my new 870 out today and tried some Federal Tru-Ball slugs through it at about 140 yards.
I shot a rock several times at this distance, next time out I will bring along my range finder.
I didn't believe a smoothbore shotgun could throw a slug that accurately at that distance.

Why not?

Smooth bore muskets were pretty good out to about that distance...according to contemporary accounts...

I know what you mean though... I was expecting at best... minute of garbage can lid at 100 meters and found that I could manage about minute of 9 inch paper plate.

That's true about the muskets, but I never really tried the 870 at that distance out hunting. Usually a scattergun is a 50 yard gun with buckshot or slugs for me anyways.
