Good Hunting Boots? - Page 2

kenetrek and scarpas I've had really good results with. Depending on what your hunting. I have three different sets of scarpas and 2 different kenetreks. I wear them all and they work great. The backpacking line from scarpas are really comfortable but don't seem to last as long as the mountaineering boots.

I bought Hanwag's this year, but have only had them out a handful of times. So far so good, but I have no long term report for them. They are the Omega model, leather lined. I ordered them from Lathrop and Sons as Monod's in Banff carries the Hanwag Yukon, Alaskan, or Trapper (among others). They all appear to be excellent boots.

Will be trying on the Irish Setter 860 Elk Trackers tonight at Cabalas.
And the Meindl Alaska Hunter 50's.
They both look / sound good in the catalague, we'll see how they feel.
I will be leaving with one pr.

I can tell you what NOT to buy....

Cabelas Whitetail Extreme boots. Not waterproof as advertised, and really not that warm. Good for September...thats about it. Nice to walk in though, but dont hold up to real hunting (water/cold).

If you are looking for a hiking style boot you can't beat the Hanwag Alaska Gtx.
I am on my second set - the first went 10 years and I am still using them...
Same set of laces too!
They are a bit hard to find and will run you at least 4 bills.
I have had Meindl and Scarpa and prefer the Hanwags to those, although the Meindl boots fit me like they were made just for me.

I ordered them from the US, since Cabelas don't have them in Canada. According to Meindl the warranty covers their product globally, so I can return them to anybody who sells them, they would take care of the repair or replacement.

Of course, after I bought them they went on sale for $ 149.66!! It's like $120 off of the regular price.

Ask Cabelas to honor the sale price. Many vendors will within a reasonable period. Even if they honor it with credit for the difference.

I already asked them. They said no, they will not refund the difference nor they give me store credit. If I was in the US I'd just return it and buy another pair, but to pay shipping 2x again just not worth it. I wish I could bought it in Alberta. I've put 200 km in sheep country on them in the last 2 years and they look brand new. The beauty of the boot design is they can be re-soled. Mink oil a few times a year and a new insole every year and they'll last you for 5-10 years.

I got these exact boots at a thrift store for $4.00
They are at least on their 2nd soles and still going strong. I have had them for a while. Warm enough and super comfy.

So what do you all prefer, leather, synthetic or the combination of both?
Do you think leather will outlast synthetic?
I haven't wear leather boots since I was in the military - and that was a long time ago. Where I use to hunt before I didn't have to consider cold and snow as a factor, I have to wear snake boots though....

Many of you like the Irish Setter Elk Hunter. If my Meindl ever fails I'll check them out.

Leather all the way. Synthetic is garbage. I can crush a pair of synthetics in the 2 months of bow season alone. Never again will I buy a boot that isn't made from some sort of animal!!

Says waterproof and all, but just wondering if protecting them is necessary.

It's does. I use RW for work for many years now and I find that their letter protection cream works great. I recently got the elk trackers as well and I love them. I find them a little bit bulky but man they are one good pair of boots for the price.
Did they give you one?

Hanwag's!!!! I have two pair, had the first pair now for 7 years and still going strong. Second pair are new and only have worn a few times but glad I have them as the price goes up every year. I wear them year round, get some good Smartwool socks while you are buying your boots and enjoy!!!

Mink oil is what you want to treat them with. Follow direction on can and rub on with a cloth. Twice a year!

I never had a problem with mine. And after 7 years of hunting a stitch came loose, opening up a seam/hole. Brought them back with no receipt and Voila, they gave me a brand new pair. Can't beat that warranty.

Purchased a pair of Hanwags for sheep hunting this year and they're GREAT boots.
