Been striking out on cow elk in 359...put on many miles and talked to literally dozens of landowners and leaseholders with everyone saying the same thing...haven't seen any elk around in the past month. We have tons of permission all across the zone but cutting very little fresh tracks.
Long shot here but if anyone has any tips I'd sure appreciate it! Pm or reply..thanks in advance!
If it's similar to 357, they're in the bush, river banks, south facing slopes. There is getting to be enough snow now and with the cold coming the next week they should start showing themselves.
And again if similar to here in 357, several years of 1500+ cow tags have really cut down the herd. There just aren't the numbers there once was.
Keep at it. You'll find one.
Cruised our area setting up snares the other day, 5-6 mile loop, 351/360 boundary, maybe one elk track, maybe a moose, but normally our fields have tons of elk trax in Jan, as specially with the crop still on.

They are in big herds now but they are only moving in the dark. Need to find where they are feeding and intercept them going back into the bush in the morning. We just got a couple.
Find elk sign, try to get permission (many farmers are fed up with hunters) and be ready to hike in early to be setup for legal light. Chances of getting one from the truck is slim. Buddy's got 3 this morning but hiked over a mile and half in the dark. We seen a dozen trucks just driving around looking and had a guy drive upto us on private property without permission! Good luck!!
We found them last night at last light and then set up on them this morning and dropped 3 in our group. We didn't tag out but everyone's going home with meat. Also saw 2 wolves but way too far to get a shot on. Great hunt...many good connections made.
