sheep/mountain boot questions?
From a few hunting guides I have spoke to and a recent thread here I have heard a lot of good about hanwag boots, in their Yukon model.
Experiences?
Any comparison in fit to my current kennetreck mountain extreme boots?
Seems easier to find hanwag in Canada...
I was recently on a website of a reputable outfitter for mountain sheep and elk.
On a "gear to bring" page showed 2 pairs of boots like the above.
Obviously day hunts from a camp but...
I only have ever taken 2 pairs of something different and complementary...
hunting boots/snow boots or
hunting boots/mid weight hikers
Two pairs of same?
Does anyone do this?

I'm no sheep hunter but I do know good boots. I bought the hanwag arctic last weekend. For a full leather boot they are light. So far I am finding them very comfy. My wife has the yukons and loves them.

I bought a pair of Alaska Boots last year for my sheep hunt, the one day we got heavy snow and the leather was soaked but I never got wet feet. I put my boots near the fire to dry out not in the fire and it seems between the rubber on the toe and the leather it has concaved and pushed down making it really hard on my toes contacted Hanwag and they said to oil them really well and it should go back to shape other then that love them and don't plan ton changing boot manufacture any time soon for sheep hunting.

Nothing will wreck a pair of good boots faster than getting them to hot. Lots of guys have ruined good boots drying them by a fire or a hot stove. Your not the first haha.

Buy a pair of moccasins and moccasins rubbers. Any sheep hunting guide will tell you that's the only way to go.

Hanwags are great boots, my wife is using the Alaska Lady and never took the time to break them in. We did an 8 day hunt for the sheep opener his year and ended up traveling approximately 56kms total and she never had a sore spot. She killed her first bighorn ram too! They must be good.
I currently run the Lowa Hunter GTX and they have been great for me as this is my fourth year on them but may look at Hanwags next.

If Hanwags fit you good you can't go wrong. I've wore out about 3 or 4 pairs of the Alaska gtx (wear them everyday) and they have held up great

Yes agreed.
Seems a bit of a "sellers market on kenetreks"
Who did you buy from?
Feel free to send me a PM

Been using Obenauf's boot wax on my hanwags. Work excellent to prevent leather from soaking up water. It also protects the leather of you boots. Give my boots a lite mist of Obenauf's silicone spray.

Hanwag Alaska gtx for my self. At first my feet were sore from the break in period between 30-50miles. My feet love them now with a good insole

And if the boots have a gore-tex liner , it shrinks when it gets hot, and it will never stretch out again. I know of a few pair of boots ruined this way.

I don't tend to post on AO as much as I used to...
The way some guys feel the need to comment have made me decide to keep some stuff a bit more private. I did post on the sheep hunters page on Facebook and received nothing but positive responses so who knows I may post up some pics here one day with a bit of a story.

Frontier in clarshome. Best place to buy kenetrek. If they don't have the size or style they can normally get them within the week.

As far as I know the only difference is a slightly stiffer sole and gore tex in the Alaska. The website doesn't mention anything about insulation in them.
To the OP you're probably best just to go to the manufacturer's website to get all the specs

Thanks for the tip.
One of the better prices.
But $649 is more than double what I paid, less than 8 years ago.
Problem is the kenetrek mountain extreme felt custom made from the 1st time I tried them on.
But I will be looking at those yukons soon...
