Ravens made short work of that in the limited time they had...... too bad and I guess you could shrug it off but there are ways to avoid this in the future and it doesn't take much. Lesson learnt I hope and congrats on hauling your buddies Elk off the hill. Looks like you must have been able to drive up to it pretty close to get it in whole
Jumping to conclusions are you not? Any small carnivorous predator could have visited the kill. You can drag an elk whole for miles before loading it in a truck.

Hunting up high means downhill drag.

And you all know.. I chucked that mouse of an elk over me shoulder and carried it 1/2 way.

Woulda done the whole trip, but I felt I was being selfish and had a hankering for coffee... in me thermos.

Ranger knows what I can do when it comes to moving elk.

I've left elk.

I've been where we left moose.

I always covered with spruce, left clothing, and peed around it.

Not my kill. I respect my buddy's accomplishment, he hunted hard. Made it back to the truck.

I blame myself for not giving him a radio.

We'll leave it at that.

BD, I too have had to leave animals in the bush overnight. I suspect most of us who has hunted in the mountains lots have had to do so. It can be challenging enough hauling out a big game animal in the daylight and extremely difficult in the dark, even with headlamps. And then of course, there is the risk factor of having to deal with a large predator in the dark that is attracted to your kill. Gota say, I have been fortunate in that I have not lost any meat doing so. As you described, covering your kill with tree boughs, urinating and possibly leaving a piece of unneeded clothing on the kill is a good practice. Congrats on recovering your buddies elk with what appears to be minimal loss.

Bessie, not saying you ain't tough. Don't know you from Adam. I was just curious.
A guy works hard enough for his game and when successful I want to get it broke down and back to camp or the truck without loss.
Your buddy was lucky. Best of luck in 2017.

Yes he was lucky! No one likes to see even the smallest game left behind.

A large animal down at last light. Way back in the boonies or up in the boonies! Weather! Dark! No communication! Bessie I am glad your buddy chose to get back to base. If you would have lost the elk we would have all had a swat at you, but next to a human being elk meat is nothing. Bessie, I am glad your buddy made it back. We could have been talking about something else. Celebrate a successful hunt

Nice. But as usual a price is paid. Bits and pieces and blood and sweat is left on the mountain side. I usually hunt near Waterton and sometimes your not sure if your hunting or being hunted. With all the predators where I hunt I can assure you, their would be little left if left overnight.
I noticed from your pix that there appears to be a pole barn there and a possible road. Do you have access to it or did you hike up to there? Some of those ranchers are pretty good about helping in getting an elk or moose out of the bush with the use of a nice looking tractor coming your way. Enjoy.

Bobby

Default Great job

Congrats on the elk. I've been in the situation of having to leave a moose overnight. It happens. I'm not to sure what's up with the couple guys on here giving a hard time about it. I say good job. Hope you get well soon.

It'll probably be fine.

Maybe score a wolf bounty in the AM!

Long day!

Excellent.

Congrats to your buddy on his cow.

I have left many animals out over night with no issues. I usually leave the layer which I am wearing closest to my body hanging close by the carcass.
